Today, GivingTuesday and our partners at Candid?and Network for Good is now Bonterra?released Dollars and Change, a collaborative and comprehensive study of charitable giving trends in the U.S. from 2015 to 2022. Stemming from a desire to explore the benefits and challenges of merging data, this report offers a comprehensive view of capital movement within the nonprofit sector alongside recommendations for stronger data sharing. ?? Here are some of our key findings: - Giving by individual and institutional donors has increased. Between 2015 and 2022, donations from individuals and institutions have grown significantly. Individual donations increased by 58%, with average gifts rising from $442 to $611. Institutional grants saw a 74% boost, with the average grant size growing from about $53,000 to nearly $98,000. - Large donors and major grantmakers contribute a significant share of charitable giving. On average, just 0.3% of individual donors contributed more than $50,000 annually, yet their gifts accounted for 45% of total donations. Similarly, the top 0.1% of institutional grantmakers award more than $100 million yearly, representing over a third (35%) of all grantmaking dollars. - Declining focus on education funding. Despite education remaining a priority for institutional grantmakers, the proportion of grantmaking for educational organizations has decreased significantly—from 32% of total grant dollars in 2015 to just 24% in 2022. - Economic influence on giving. Economic conditions significantly influence the giving patterns of both individual donors and institutional grantmakers. Additionally, institutional grantmakers demonstrate a strong correlation between previous years' economic conditions and their current-year contributions, with their giving patterns closely aligning with inflation trends. - States with more poverty tended to receive less charitable giving. States with higher poverty rates tend to receive less charitable giving per capita. However, exceptions like New York, Tennessee, Arizona, and North Carolina suggest that local donor preferences and state-level economic diversity may influence these trends. We hope this report helps better illustrate the possibilities and challenges of combining large datasets from across the sector to enable deeper learning. Use it as a tool to improve what data you collect and how you inform effective practices. Dive into the full report here: https://shorturl.at/xZ6TT

Wrapping up a fantastic week in Indianapolis! The first half of the week I helped produce the second GivingTuesday US Community Leader Gathering of the year. These events are so much fun because they bring together an amazing group of people dedicated to bettering their communities. We volunteered at Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, learned from industry experts Travis Brown of Mojo Up Marketing + Media and Annie Collins and Samir Khan from the GivingTuesday Data Commons, and spent time brainstorming how to integrate the things we learned into the Leader's Community Campaign. A huge shout out to the incredible Community Leaders in the GivingTuesday movement, especially those that joined us at this event, and in Nashville back in May. I can't wait to see their ideas come to fruition!

We released our Q2 2024 GivingPulse survey report today, and it’s full of insights about how people are acting on their generosity and what keeps them inspired to give. Once again, we've found that 8% of people who hadn’t been asked to give recently would’ve given had they been asked. That means not only that nonprofits are leaving money on the table, but that those people are not being offered every opportunity to participate in civil society and become passionate about your cause. The idea of asking people to give seems simple, but it’s actually immensely powerful. The fact that we need to ask people to give doesn’t mean that people aren’t innately generous. It reinforces the fact people respond well to opportunities that help them embody their most generous selves and connect to others--like GivingTuesday, yes, also giving circles, community drives, giving days, collective volunteer opportunities. At Impact Europe’s Transformers event in the Hague in June, Alliance Magazine observed that corporates are capable of doing so much more in terms of impact investing. Leaders at the convening of charities, businesses, and various bodies interested in impact investing consistently said that convincing the right people in their organizations to invest more in social impact was a battle.? But what do you think, are corporates committed to social investment? What more could they be doing? Please, share your thoughts.

Want to better understand how donors engage with their peers, where people direct their money during a crisis, and how giving behaviors changed this quarter?? The new GivingPulse report covers all of that — plus some! Here’s a quick peek at what we observed in Q2 of 2024:?? ? While people are responding to solicitation consistently, fewer people are being asked to give — and fewer people are giving ? The rate of people donating online is stable — but in-person donations fell? ? Nearly 40% of individuals responding to crises this quarter directed their generosity towards U.S. based but non-local recipients ? New analysis allows us to explore different generosity trends across various community types (drawing from the excellent American Communities Project) Trends in this report remind us that generosity is always evolving, and it's critical to know how to adapt. Check out our full report today and share your takeaways below!
