Recent US government funding cuts represent a significant shift in the global health funding landscape. The US has historically provided roughly 20% to 25% ($12 billion to $15 billion) of total global health assistance, and the administration has discussed potentially reducing that funding by 35% to 90% (though long-term effects remain uncertain and exact numbers remain difficult to ascertain). As a result, we’re seeing substantial disruption to global health programs. Our research team has pivoted to address this situation, which is now a major focus. We’ve created a webpage to provide an overview of how we’re responding, and we’ve started to record a series of conversations with our research team that shares timely snapshots of this rapidly evolving situation. While the long-term effects of the current funding freeze remain uncertain, significant cuts to U.S. global health aid may soon occur. This makes private philanthropy—and doing the most good with each dollar—even more important for improving and saving the most lives we can. We recently hosted a webinar to share our current understanding of this rapidly evolving situation and the ways we're adapting in response, which you can view here: https://lnkd.in/e3gX7rd6.

The USAID funding freeze: How you can help fill critical global health gaps The recent freeze on US aid funding has created an unprecedented crisis in global health services. Despite a judicial order temporarily lifting it, implementation challenges and system disruptions continue to leave millions without access to essential care. What you need to know: ?? The situation remains highly uncertain, with limited clarity on which programmes will eventually resume. ?? Cost-effectiveness is key - we need to prioritise programmes that save the most lives per dollar. ?? Even GiveWell-supported programmes that weren't directly funded by USAID are experiencing indirect impact. How you can help: 1?? Continue to support GiveWell's programmes - they remain a highly effective way to support the kind of work that's being cut. 2?? Consider donating to GiveWell's more flexible funds (All Grants Fund or Top Charities Fund) to enable them to respond strategically as the situation evolves. 3?? Explore the Rapid Response Fund, set up by Founders Pledge & The Life You Can Save specifically to fill critical funding gaps for high-impact organisations affected by the freeze. While our research team has not evaluated the grantmaking in detail, and can’t advise on how donating to this fund compares to donating to GiveWell programs, we do know the fund specifically supports organisations that meet Founders Pledge and The Life You Can Save’s cost-effectiveness criteria.? Remember: This crisis highlights (and significantly worsens) an ongoing reality - even before the freeze, government aid was not enough to provide lifesaving services to all who need them. By supporting effective organisations and raising awareness of high-impact giving opportunities, we can help ensure that essential services reach those in need. Effective giving is more important now than ever, and collective action can’t be underestimated. Let’s work together to deliver life-saving services to those in need by supporting (and spreading the word about) highly impactful programs! ?? New Incentives is now operating in 11 states in northern Nigeria! We expanded to select areas in Niger State in December 2024 and in Yobe State in January 2025. GiveWell estimates that operating our program in these areas is 9-12x as cost-effective as unconditional cash transfers (the benchmark for cost-effectiveness) due to low existing vaccination coverage, high expected impact from cash incentives, moderate to high mortality rates, and high efficacy of routine immunizations. As in our other operating areas, we will conduct ongoing vaccination coverage surveys to keep a pulse on our impact. Read more: https://lnkd.in/edZmb4nZ

We're launching a public Request for Information (RFI) to identify organizations interested in implementing chlorination programs in our highest-priority countries. Finding organizations that can scale cost-effective chlorination programs is our water team's biggest priority. We're looking to initially fund small-scale pilots to demonstrate operational feasibility. If the pilots prove successful, we'll then consider larger, follow-on grants to scale the programs. If you work in the water sector or know organizations that might be a good fit for this RFI, please share this opportunity and encourage them to apply. Interested organizations can email [email protected] with any questions. The application deadline is March 7. Learn more on our blog: https://bit.ly/4gQnC5t
