We're in GQ magazine with the most terrifying set of sperm images I have ever seen in my life. The article, titled "Are Men in a Spermpocalypse? The Future of Sperm", follows an author's journey through the process of testing his sperm with us. I wanted to share some of the highlights from the piece by Rosecrans Baldwin. "For a reproductive checkup, I turned instead to Legacy, a sperm-testing and -banking start-up that analyzes its clients’ semen for sperm count and motility, among other factors, including DNA fragmentation. “Our fastest--growing segment is actually men who are healthy, who just want to be proactive about their sperm health,” founder and CEO Khaled Kteily said. Customers range from Navy SEALs about to enter boot camp to trans women who want to have a child with their own DNA someday. Sperm banking isn’t common practice for healthy young men at present, but Kteily is betting on that changing. -- The lede is also a heck of an intro, inspired by a quote Brian A. Today, Business Insider shared their list of the top 30 early-stage startups most likely to become tech unicorns. Legacy is on that list. I don't usually put much stock into "lists". But this listing is unique -- it is based on TRAC.vc's proprietary algorithm, which has already identified multiple unicorns, and is able to use its predictive modeling to invest in startups they deem most likely (20%+ probability) to become a billion-dollar outcome in the next 5 years. One of the biggest strengths at Legacy? We're in a market that is rapidly growing, driven by increased awareness around sperm testing, sperm freezing, and the fact that male fertility is 50% of the fertility equation -- it is NOT a "women's issue!" This is also driven by the incoming administration, which is increasingly discussing novel policies to help increase the birth rate -- a major point of focus for the coming years. Earlier analysis of male fertility is one factor that will ultimately help couples overcome cases of infertility (which, as a reminder, affects 1 in 6 couples globally). This would be in line with work we already do, including serving the U.S. military for sperm testing & freezing (specifically, through the VA). If we do our job right, annual sperm testing will become more common as a window into men's health, and early sperm freezing will become more common to provide increased optionality for men that may want children someday.
