The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation believes that effective tech philanthropy requires a nuanced understanding of AI’s potential, alongside a commitment to ethical, inclusive development. This week, philanthropic leaders across the country joined us for #FundAI – a two-day in-person convening designed to help the philanthropic sector gain the strategic perspective, technical knowledge, and practical tools necessary to fund #AI for social impact. Our collaborative efforts with Google.org, the GitLab Foundation, and Fast Forward brought together over 100 philanthropic groups eager to delve into AI’s potential to drive progress across sectors and communities across the globe. We came away from our conversations hopeful that our learning agenda will help pave the way for informed evaluation of funding tech for good initiatives – in service of creating a human-centered, tech-enabled future. Leaders of philanthropic institutions are grappling with an urgent question — how can we ensure that emerging technologies advance our shared purpose and improve the lives of the communities we serve? Meanwhile, a critical funding gap persists for nonprofits deploying AI, machine learning, and other tech-enabled approaches to tackle major societal challenges. To unlock resources for this critical work, grantmakers need the right tools, knowledge, and community of practice to thoroughly evaluate and champion proposals that involve data science, AI, and technology product development. Next week, in partnership with Google.org, the GitLab Foundation, and Fast Forward, PJMF aims to help close that gap by convening Fund.AI — a two-day in-person peer learning exchange where grantmakers will learn directly from each other, and from the builders of nonprofit tech, on how great technology products are built and how we can help the ecosystem grow. Have ideas for what funders should know about nonprofit tech? Let us know in the comments! Stay connected with us at mcgovern.org and The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. #FundAI #TechForGood #AI

As AI continues to transform industries, philanthropic organizations are recognizing its potential to help nonprofits amplify their impact. A recent Fast Company article by Michelle Armstrong highlights the importance of closing the AI skills gap and how nonprofits are increasing their fluency in AI. ?? “We hope that over time philanthropy will fund more of these transformational use cases that have the potential to help nonprofits deliver services in new ways. There’s a role for philanthropy in all of it,” said Alex Swartsel, managing director at Jobs for the Future (JFF)'s Center for Artificial Intelligence & the Future of Work — and an advisory board member for our AI for Economic Opportunity Fund. Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy, but this sector faces challenges like climate change, low youth engagement, decreased soil quality, and declining production. That’s where CAP Youth Empowerment Institute (CAPYEI) comes in. With support from the GitLab Foundation, CAPYEI has launched a program to train and equip young people with the skills they need for careers in agriculture. ?? “If 100 young people enroll in our program, it’s almost guaranteed that 85 of them will be able to earn a living wage within one year using the skills we teach,” said Ndungu Kahihu, executive director of CAPYEI. “Our goal is to ensure that every young person in Kenya has access to the same opportunities, no matter where they live.” Learn more about CAPYEI at the link in the comments. ?? #socialimpact #climatesmart #economicdevelopment

?? Congratulations to our board member Freddy Vega for receiving one of this year's World Education Medals! Freddy is the founder and CEO of Platzi, which is the largest tech school in Latin America and one of the most respected edtech companies in the world. Platzi has provided high-quality training and education to more than 5 million students. World Education Medals are awarded to leaders who transform education and close learning gaps for underserved populations. We can't think of a more deserving recipient!
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has." This morning we unveil three remarkable leaders from the world of education who exemplify what Margaret Mead meant in the above quote. I am excited that this year's World Education Medals are awarded to: Angeline Murimirwa is awarded the Africa Education Medal. Angie is the CEO of CAMFED - Campaign for Female Education, a pan-African, grassroots-led NGO that tackles poverty, inequality and injustice through girls’ education and women’s leadership. Murimirwa herself was one of the first girls supported by CAMFED to go to secondary school in Zimbabwe, and understands from first-hand experience the hurdles girls face in accessing education. Now CAMFED’s CEO, she is uniquely positioned to bring the expertise of girls and women once excluded from education to inform policy and strategy at every level. Baela Jamil is awarded the Asia Education Medal. Baela is the CEO of Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) (Centre for Education and Consciousness) in Pakistan, whose mission is to build a nationwide social movement for progressive education, learning and life skills for all children, adolescents and youth inclusively through evidence, innovations, digital solutions and partnerships. A public policy specialist and activist, Jamil has led social movements for early childhood education, girls' education, and education in emergencies. Her contributions to education saw her nominated for the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan's highest civilian honours.? Freddy Vega is awarded the Latin America Education Medal. Freddy is the Founder and CEO of Platzi, the largest tech school in Latin America. Today, every startup in the region has Platzi students and every country has founders who studied at Platzi. Platzi is the largest professional education platform in the Spanish-speaking world and one of the most important online communities specialising in technology and digital skills in Latin America. It has been recognised as #40 in TIME magazine’s top EdTech companies in the world. The company has served over 5 million students from across more than 85 nations and works with over 3,500 companies in training and upskilling their talent force. The World Education Medals honour the leaders working tirelessly to transform education in the places where learning gaps are greatest. To meet UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 of universal quality education, to end learning poverty, close learning gaps, and unlock these continents’ potential, we must give a platform to changemakers from across society who are making a real difference. Congratulations to our 2024 Medallists Angeline Murimirwa, Baela Jamil and Freddy Vega. The world, has so much to learn from your inspirational examples. I thank our Founding Partner, HP and Mayank Dhingra for their partnership in this initiative. #WorldEduMedals #education
