The rainbow is seen as a bridge between this world and the spirit world, symbolizing communication with ancestors and divine forces. The rainbow’s colors reflect the sacred directions and elements of Lakota cosmology, representing unity and the interconnectedness of all beings. Some Lakota teachings speak of the Rainbow Warriors—a prophecy in which people of all backgrounds come together to restore balance to the Earth. The Electricity Monopoly and the Interstate Commerce Act (1887) “Monopolies are generally viewed as harmful because they obstruct the free competition that determines the price and quality of products and services offered to the public. The railroad monopolies had the power to set prices, exclude competitors, and control the market in several geographic areas. Although there was competition among railroads for long-haul routes, there was none for short-haul runs. Railroads discriminated in the prices they charged to passengers and shippers in different localities by providing rebates to large shippers or buyers. Attached are the service area maps of CRA-Electric Services, which operates across Arizona and California, and Lacreek Electric, serving South Dakota and Nebraska. Both utilities have seemingly engaged in interstate commerce for decades. Why, then, do certain electricity monopolies still operate under state jurisdiction, preserving the similar corporate privileges that once led to the enactment of the Interstate Commerce Act—legislation originally designed to curb the entitlements of railroad companies?
