GirlTREK is on a mission to increase the life expectancy of Black women by 10 years in 10 years.
关于我们
GirlTREK is one of the largest public health movements for Black women in the United States. Founded in 2010, GirlTREK began with a simple call to action: walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, as an act of radical self-care. Since our humble beginnings, we have grown to an organization of over 1 million Black women across the nation and have reached 49 countries across the world. As a grassroots movement, our programming has done what no billion-dollar weight loss company or public health campaign has done. Black women are walking at life-saving levels. They’re getting off meds. They’re losing weight. They’re finding joy. Over the past 10 years, GirlTREK has become one of the single, most effective public health interventions in the country. During the next?10 years, GirlTREK is focusing on institutionalizing systems change and leveraging a critical mass of Black women to reclaim our neighborhoods, create population-level change, and inspire a global culture of health care that will reverse the devastating impacts of chronic disease. To do this, we have shifted our efforts toward a new mission to increase the life expectancy of Black women by 10 years in 10 years. Our next phase of impact includes emphasis on place-based initiatives that engage Black women across the American south to lead and influence in their local communities. With a priority population focusing on young adults ages 18-24, GirlTREK will empower the next generation to build awareness of health issues that impact their lives, take clear action steps toward improving their health, and advocate for systemic changes needed to reduce health disparities and increase the life expectancy of Black women.

I am the daughter of….. I’ve dusted off my walking shoes and for the last couple of days have been listening to the GirlTREK #BlackHistoryMonth Boot Camp while on the treadmill. Today’s podcast prompted me to think about the women that paved the way for me, creating inroads so that I could flourish and prosper. With it being International Women’s Day, I did not have to look far. During my presentation at the #SunshineCyberCon last week, I talked about my mother’s trailblazing in 1987- by starting a women’s boutique back home, leaving a “safe” career in banking to become an entrepreneur. With a supportive husband and four kids in tow, she then went on to open another store at the same time. I definitely get my scrappiness from her. Without her example, I would not feel confident or comfortable taking risks, pivoting with a plan or launching my visions into the void. So today, I am asking, who are you the #daughter of? Who was the mentor or coach that helped you get to where you are today? Thank them today. Tell them today! **Wanna listen to stories of #powerful women in #black history while getting your steps in? Part 3: If you're looking for a nonprofit to support this #GivingTuesday, consider an organization that has a leader participating in The Allstate Foundation's #ExecutiveLeadershipProgram Class of 2025! Not only are these organizations doing incredible work, but they have phenomenal leaders guiding the way. Here are the leaders and organizations disrupting the cycle and prevalence of relationship abuse: -Alicia Williamson at Ohio Domestic Violence Network -Amanda Vickstrom at Minnesota Elder Justice Center -Ayanna Taylor, Ed.D, MPA at GirlTREK -Deadria Boyland at Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence -Hillary Douin, LCSW, CDVP at YWCA Evanston/North Shore -Krittika Ghosh at Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project -Krista Colon at California Partnership to End Domestic Violence -La Tonya Walker, MS, ICDVP at WINGS Program, Inc. -Christina Cherry at Synergy Services -Liz Odongo at DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence -Rosemary Estrada-Rade at National Domestic Violence Hotline -Sarah K. at Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence -tai simpson at Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence See my other posts for the leaders and organizations empowering youth, advancing racial equity and creating economic mobility!

My heart is full! ?? Earlier today, I added several hundred people to Unwrapit's #GivingTuesday gift campaign, and then hit 'notify recipients'. The roughly 300 people I added (including some of you reading this) are a mix of long-time supporters of Unwrapit's mission to make corporate gifting a net-positive for society, and people who registered/attended one of several events that I had the privilege of speaking at recently. Everyone in the campaign can claim a $5 donation gift from Unwrapit in support of a charity of their choice, or to one of several charities that our team handpicked because of their important and timely work, specifically: The Center for Cultural Power, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Right To Play, GirlTREK, Daily Bread Food Bank, First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation , War Child Canada, and Covenant House Toronto. This is what #GivingTuesday can and needs to be all about... People and companies trusting and equipping others to donate to the causes they care about most. This model places no administrative or financial burden on the organizations that receive the support. And it helps build personal and professional relationships that are important to the initiator, in this case relationships that are important to me and the Unwrapit team. This gift campaign is open to the public and will max out at 250 claimed gifts or Friday at 5pm ET (whichever comes first). Of course, feel free to add yourself: https://lnkd.in/gi-2J4pW #GivingTuesday #Philanthropy #RelationshipBuilding

Over Thanksgiving weekend, we teamed up with GirlTREK to host the Black Family 5K Walk at Peloton Studios New York. Instructors Jess Sims and Kirsten Ferguson joined GirlTREK community members to celebrate family, gratitude, and health. The walk was a culmination of our Sister Saturday walks we've been doing this fall with GirlTREK at Peloton showrooms across the US through our Wellbeing for Life program. Wellbeing for Life is Peloton's social impact program, which aims to democratize access to physical and mental wellness through Peloton products, content, and community partnerships. GirlTREK is America’s largest nonprofit focused on the health of Black women and girls, and has been a Peloton partner since 2021.

In the latest from our Exponential Narratives newsletter we interview Kathryn Schotthoefer and she shares this case study in growth through effective community engagement: "GirlTREK' growth wasn’t due to a complex content strategy; it was a simple, community-driven effort encouraging Black women to walk for health” says Kat. “The model worked because it tapped into the community’s values, motivations, and identity.” https://lnkd.in/gC5txXiJ

I'm reflecting on last week’s #TEDNext where I was inspired, met new people, and caught up with lots of good friends.? ? I especially appreciated celebrating GirlTREK as?T. Morgan Dixon and Vanessa Garrison were featured on the Next Stage in a terrific and powerful interview with?Pat Mitchell. GirlTrek is a global movement of Black women leveraging the historic legacy of walking and the power of self-care as a pathway to heal and transform our lives – I admire their work so much! ? Other special highlights from the conference included: learning about Glass Half Full, a New Orleans based glass recycling company, being in awe of the vocal gifts of Snow Raven, listening to T. Morgan Dixon in another conversation with Stacey Abrams, and feeling joy at getting to hear Indigo Girls in live performance. ? It was an excellent TED experience!
