Girls on the Run Rhode Island is currently seeking volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors for the upcoming term beginning in July. We serve youth from a wide variety of life experiences and backgrounds, so it is important to us that our Board of Directors reflects our whole community. We are especially excited to hear from bilingual individuals or those who live or work in the core cities of RI (Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, Woonsocket) or in the gateway cities of Bristol County, MA (Attleboro, Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton). We do request that you live in Rhode Island or Bristol County, Massachusetts. Interested individuals are not required to have any previous board experience. There are no specific educational or professional requirements to join. We are looking for volunteers who are: ? Active in their community. ? Skilled or interested in legal, finance, fundraising, or nonprofit sector work. ? Excited about empowering girl-identifying youth through social emotional learning and physical activity! Today, on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we recognize the achievements of female athletes and the importance of sports for girls and women. As a member of the Girls on the Run Rhode Island community, we thank you for celebrating girls and women in sports, not only today, but every day of the year! Increased physical activity is linked to long-term physical health, improved academic performance, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and so much more. A 2024 study by the Women’s Sports Foundation showed the positive impact that playing sports has on the mental health of girls: ?The benefits of sports are greater and unique when compared to other extracurricular activities--especially in settings focused on effort, improvement, and teamwork rather than winning. ??♀?Mental health disorders are 1.5 to 2.5 times lower for girls who play sports vs those who never played. ??Girls who play sports report 1.5 times higher levels of meaning and purpose compared to those who never played. At Girls on the Run, 93% of participants say that because of participating in our program, they like to be active. 94% of caregivers described their child as physically active after Girls on the Run, compared to 60% of caregivers who described their child as physically active before Girls on the Run. After completing our program this Fall, one of our participants said, “Being on a team means being able to support the other teammates and it means for other teammates to be able to support you too.” Thank you coaches, families, and supporters for your dedication to girls in sports.
