This project preserves the rich history of Black Tulsa and the community’s strength in rebuilding after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. • There’s so much to discover in our archive, and you can be part of it! ?? Amanda Summers, Duane H. King Postdoctoral Fellow at the Helmerich Center for American Research and The University of Tulsa, brings a unique perspective to the study of colonial Latin America and the Caribbean. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, race, religion, and incarceration during the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly the lived experiences of those imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition. Through her work, she uncovers how inmates used sex, violence, and community to resist the oppressive system. If you’re interested in this fascinating research or conducting your own, there’s an amazing opportunity for you! Apply for a research fellowship at the Helmerich Center for American Research before the March 31 deadline: bit.ly/ResearchHCAR.

"A rebellious Indian proclaiming noble ancestry and entitlement, a military lieutenant foreshadowing the coming of revolution, a blasphemous Creole embroiderer in possession of a bundle of sketches brimming with pornography. All shared one thing in common. During the late eighteenth century, they were deemed to be mad and forcefully admitted to the Hospital de San Hipólito in Mexico City, the first hospital of the New World to specialize in the care and custody of the mentally disturbed." Join Dr. Christina Ramos on March 7, for a deep dive into her award-winning book "Bedlam in the New World: A Mexican Madhouse in the Age of Enlightenment," as she explores the fascinating history of the Hospital de San Hipólito in Mexico City. ?????? Dr. Ramos will be joined by other experts including Dr. Rich Lizardo from the University of Tulsa and Dr. Martha Few from Penn State University, for a conversation on the book’s critical insights into Latin American history, medicalization, and more. Don’t miss out on this thought-provoking discussion! Register for free: my.gilcrease.org/33034
