We were privileged to celebrate Dr. George Blue Spruce Jr. at his proclamation presentation and celebration at A.T. Still University. In 1956, Dr. Blue Spruce made history as the first American Indian to graduate from dental school, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Creighton University. Beyond his trailblazing achievements, he has mentored many, including students in ATSU’s Native American Physician Assistant program. Today, he continues to inspire as the Assistant Dean for American Indian Affairs at ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health and as the founder of the Society of American Indian Dentists. We’re incredibly proud to share a connection with his legacy through his grandson, Dr. Cassidy Reader, who serves as a dentist in the Dental Department at our Hau’pal (Red Tail Hawk) Health Center, as well as Dr. Joseph Jagers, the department manager and dentist, and Frances Antone, Physician Assistant and Elev8 Initiative Program Leader.
