A single pair of jeans requires 5,000 litres of water, equivalent to four months of daily showers. From microplastics to massive water usage, fashion's hidden environmental costs are staggering. Read on for more key insights from our founder Jo Hand around sustainable fashion.

?????????????? ???????????????? ???????? ???????? ???????????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ????????????????. After leading a client workshop on sustainable fashion today, I'm sharing key insights on switches that benefit both the planet and the wallet: Fashion's impact on our environment extends far beyond what many realize. At 5%+ of global emissions, the clothing industry's carbon footprint exceeds that of aviation, which accounts for around 2%. The scale of this industry has doubled in just 15 years, fuelled by fast fashion and increasing consumption patterns. ?????????? ?????????? in fashion is high. A single pair of jeans requires approximately 5000 litres of water – equivalent to four months of daily showers. For most consumers, the water footprint of their wardrobe significantly outweighs that of their household use. This intense water consumption has devastating, real-world consequences. The Aral Sea which lies between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, once the world's fourth largest inland body of water, has lost 90% of its volume over the past 50 years, largely due to water diversion for cotton cultivation. This environmental disaster has destroyed local fishing industries, displaced communities, created a more extreme climate, and generated toxic dust storms that contribute to serious health conditions from throat cancer to kidney disease. ?????????????????? represents another critical concern. Textile dyeing and treatment contribute to 20% of industrial water pollution globally. When washed, synthetic clothing also releases microplastics: a single laundry load can discharge up to 700,000 microfibers that can eventually enter our food chain, affecting both wildlife and human health. ?????????? generated by the fashion industry is material too. Every year 80-100 billion items of clothing are produced globally, and every second, the equivalent of a garbage truck load of clothing is incinerated or relegated to landfill. ????, ???????? ?????? ???? ????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ?????? Giki ???????? 1.????Consider adopting a "30 wears" approach – only purchase items you'll wear at least 30 times. Helps avoid waste 2.????For occasional needs, explore renting, borrowing, or going second-hand. 3.????Go pre-loved if you needs to buy something 4.????Extend garment lifespans through repair. 5.????Follow garment care instructions carefully to preserve your clothes for longer. 6. Check you really need it - think before you buy. This can be good news for our wallet! By making mindful adjustments to how we purchase, care for, and dispose of clothing, we can substantially reduce our environmental impact while often improving our personal finances in the process. What eco-friendly fashion brands or apps have you discovered? Share your favourites in the comments – my current favourite is Vinted for fantastic, low cost, pre-loved clothing #sustainablefashion #climateaction #circulareconomy

This International Women's Day, discover why women's leadership in climate action matters. Despite making up two-thirds of Giki's sustainability leaders, women remain underrepresented in global power structures while bearing disproportionate climate impacts. Check out this post from our founder Jo Hand to learn how empowering women's voices creates more effective climate solutions. #IWD

???????? ?????????????????????????? ??????????'?? ??????: ?????????????????????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ???????????? & ?????? ?????????? ???????????? ???????????? The last century has witnessed giant steps forward in rights for women and when women do gain leadership roles, great things can happen. Many of the leaders addressing climate change are women. Within our community of corporate sustainability leaders we work with at Giki, 2/3 are women; and across the globe, in communities, in politics and in the corporate sector, it is frequently women who are leading positive change to protect the world for future generations. But we still have a long way to go. Under 10% of CEOs running the largest 500 companies are women, and under 30 countries have a female head of state or government. In addition, women who are frequently on the frontline of climate changes, do not have the voice or influence to make a positive difference. Here’s why that is a big problem: ?????????????? ???????????? ???????? ???????????????????? ???????????? Women in many societies play an important role in the provision of water and food production. Yet these responsibilities don't necessarily come with authority because in many countries women have limited influence over decisions on how land and resources are used and managed. They also often find it harder to access government support. For example, in rural Sudan, farm-aid programmes, government credit, and other inputs which could help with adaptation often exclude women farmers. ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????? ?????????? In addition, women are disproportionately affected by climate change. The traditional female role in many societies, combined with reproductive health requirements, means women and girls are more prone to be affected. In low income countries, women frequently earn a living in agriculture and account for the majority (45-80%) of food production, so their livelihoods are frequently impacted by droughts, heat waves, and floods. ?????? ???????? ?????????????? Education is part of the solution, from basics such as literacy, which makes it easier for women to access information on climate resilience and adaptation. It also enables women to have a stronger voice in society and bring a wealth of often untapped knowledge and experience to the table. As a woman, I am hugely lucky to have been born in a country where women generally have excellent rights. Giving women a louder voice and stronger influence in decision-making at all levels is crucial to speeding up the resolution of the climate crisis we face. So here’s to celebrating all the incredible women, working to help protect the planet for future generations. Who are the female climate leaders who inspire you? Share their stories and impact in the comments below to help celebrate their successes. #SustainabilityLeadership #WomenInClimate #ClimateAction #ESGLeaders #IWD

Whether you're planning a grand holiday or a quick weekend getaway, these five thoughtful approaches to travel can help reduce your environmental impact whilst enhancing your experience, from our recent Green Champions Webinar with Michele Harvey.

???I Asked a Travel Industry Veteran How to Fix One of Tourism's Biggest Challenges. Here are the key takeaways: ? ??The Challenge: With travel accounting for 16% of global emissions, many assume sustainable tourism means compromising on experience. But as Michele Harvey, sustainability lead at luxury active travel company Butterfield & Robinson Luxury Travel, emphasizes: "Many people think that sustainability means austerity, but that’s not true." ? ??The Solution: Drawing from her 30 years of experience and Zimbabwean roots, Michele shares how we can transform travel into a force for good. "A real win is where you make a change and end up with a better travel experience," she notes, highlighting that sustainable choices often enhance rather than diminish our journeys. ? ?Key Principles for Better Travel: ? ?Research Your Operator Look for companies measuring and actively reducing their carbon footprint - as Michele points out, "People go on the price, but what's the invisible cost?" ? ?Choose Ground Transport Where Possible B&R changed the itinerary in Vietnam, from multiple internal flights, to travelling smaller distances by land, enjoying more local culture and landscapes, with lower emissions. ? ?Stay Local and Respect Communities "You need to respect the community and culture you're going to," Michele emphasizes. Mix large hotels with locally-owned accommodations to ensure tourism benefits reach communities directly. ? ?Mind Your Resources Be conscious of local conditions, especially in water-scarce areas, learning from past tensions like Cape Town's water crisis where many locals felt angry that tourists did not face the same water restrictions as they faced around “Day Zero” (the day when the city was going to run out of water). ? ?Travel Deeper, Not Wider Focus on fewer destinations for longer periods, reducing transport emissions while gaining richer experiences. ? ????Practical steps when you’re there: - Choose local, seasonal food and mindful portion sizes - Support genuine conservation experiences over problematic wildlife tourism - Shop responsibly, avoiding products that harm local ecosystems - Consider reducing meat consumption, especially beef ? The key message remains clear: sustainable travel isn't about sacrifice - it's about making thoughtful choices that benefit both travellers and destinations. Currently there’s almost no way to travel with zero emissions. But that does not mean there are not many solutions to make it better. ? ? #SustainableTravel #ClimateAction #ResponsibleTourism #Sustainability #TravelIndustry #GikiZero

Here's how SMEs can learn from the BBC's 2024 Sustainability Roadmap, with insights from our founder Jo Hand.

?? Your SME Shortcut to Supply Chain Action (thanks to the BBC) ?? Think net zero is just for big players? Think again. The BBC's 2024 roadmap tackles everything from fleet transformation to renewable energy, sustainable production, business travel, and employee engagement- and it's packed with lessons for smaller businesses.?? While smaller businesses may not need such a comprehensive roadmap, their framework can be smartly scaled down. In this post, we'll show you how to achieve meaningful carbon reductions by adapting the BBC’s approach for smaller operations focusing on one of their key carbon cutting strategies – supply chain emissions. ??Cutting supply chain emissions? Supply chain is one of the most challenging areas for companies of any size. For the BBC it’s 55% of their GHG emissions. Here’s just some of what the BBC is doing:? ?Creating a supply chain engagement program. This includes collaboration with suppliers to drive decarbonization through procurement processes, contracts and service level agreements.?? ?Launched a Sustainable Supplier Code to drive transparency and accountability throughout supply chain. This has helped to integrate sustainability criteria into procurement processes.? ?Working to improve supply chain data. This includes improved data collection and reporting systems for supply chain emissions and engagement with suppliers on emissions reporting to make this happen.? ?Collaborate with high-spend, strategic suppliers to set science-based targets, report verified emissions to the CDP, use renewable energy, and implement emission reduction initiatives for services provided to the BBC. A deep approach for the big spend areas. Here are 3 practical ways businesses can adapt their approach: 1. Create a sustainable procurement policy? Taking inspiration from the BBC's supplier code, organizations can start with a simple policy that guides purchasing decisions. Templates are available that include:? ? Core policy document? ? Staff implementation guide? ? Supplier communication templates? ? Basic scoring framework? ? 2. Focus on key suppliers? Just as the BBC prioritizes high-impact contracts, businesses can start small and strategic:? ? Identify top 5-10 suppliers by spend? ? Look for high-emission categories? ? Begin conversations about environmental performance? ? Build sustainability into supplier relationships 3. Start with office improvements? While the BBC tracks complex supply chain data, organizations can begin with visible changes that engage teams to help take your colleagues with you:? ? Reduce single-use plastics? ? Choose energy-efficient equipment? ? Implement simple waste reduction measures? ? Track and celebrate progress? ? ??Quick next step: DM ?? me for a free sustainable procurement policy template including supplier letters and basic scoring. Thanks to BBC for creating, and sharing, a plan that others can learn from. #NetZero #SupplyChain #Sustainability #ClimateAction #SME #SmallBusiness
