GigEagle's own Mike McGinley and Jim Perkins write on the strategic imperative of talent agility in the United States Department of Defense for War on the Rocks. “Unless the U.S. military’s talent management system becomes exponentially more agile, America will struggle to win wars. The speed at which the nature of modern warfare is evolving necessitates that the U.S. military remove the friction between services and components of the total force so that the department can identify and employ the right talent at the right place at the right time." “The U.S. military should embrace a truly permeable and agile talent ecosystem that recognizes servicemembers as so much more than occupational and skill codes that are five to 15 years behind society." “The department should develop policies promoting an enterprise talent architecture that unlocks the data scattered in silos across the department, clarify funding mechanisms that can penetrate service silos, and cut the red tape that often keeps reservists out of the fight.” The Agile Talent Ecosystem powered by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU)'s #AI-enabled platform GigEagle is driving talent optimization in the DoD and beyond. #talentagility #talentfluidity #gigeconomy #futureofwork Beth Kelley Horine Chuck Kubik Meredith Kirchoff Craig Robbins Davis Winkie

The launch of an #AI-powered platform for uncovering and matching talent across the joint force is an important step in tackling what Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., has described as the current "war for talent."? Showcasing what is possible for the future of defense work is precisely what platform users are demonstrating. With a focus across the Services to find ways to drive modernization and recruit and develop top talent, the platform represents a joint capability gap solution. Air Force Reservist Maj. Kaitlin Zimmerman created her GigEagle profile and was matched with a project listed by the DoD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office to support an on-base Morale, Welfare and Recreation Center initiative. While her military job is a program manager in the Space System Command's reserve strike team, she was tapped for her civilian career skills as a principal data scientist at Amazon Web Services to help predict MWR program office staffing levels. The GigEagle platform has enterprise-wide use case potential to include supporting the active-duty component, civilian service matching, and even military spouses.? The platform is one of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) transformational projects. What does agile talent management across the joint force look like? It’s easy to think of GigEagle.mil as a new job board and shrug. BFD. Imagining the future is hard, so I want to take a moment and offer some useful fiction #FICINT to share this vision. When I worked at Amazon, I loved the Leadership Principles. “Think Big” and “Invent and Simplify” exemplify key drivers of innovation. I can’t verify it, but there’s a story that Jeff Bezos challenged his team by saying: “I want to be able to deliver a book to the moon instantly” which led to the Kindle. True or not, that’s an inspiring vision that forces them to question assumptions about book delivery. Our vanilla use case is when your military job aligns to a gig in the same service. A reservist Marine infantryman supporting an active MAGTF for an exercise. Easy match. My BHAG for GigEagle is for a reservist with a civilian medical credential to provide a short backfill for an active duty member of a different service. //Scene// Michelle is a Navy nurse at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda and she is going on parental leave for 12 weeks. The Walter Reed leadership recognize the staffing gap, so they post a gig on GigEagle. Ramon is an 11B infantry NCO in the NY National Guard and also a nurse at NY Presberterian Hospital in Queens. Instead of letting patients suffer due to staffing, Ramon backfills Michelle for 4 of those weeks and two other reserve nurses split the other 8 weeks. No impact to patient care! Civilian (and military) skills. Short duration. Joint support. Compared to shipping a book to the moon, this might sound easy, but DoD policy and processes are nearly as steadfast as the laws of physics. If we can make this happen in a highly regulated field like military medicine, then we have solved some huge challenges in the DoD. Will we? Find me a reservist with a medical credential and we will. ?????????? Kris Saling Brynt Parmeter Mike McGinley Charles Stewart Craig Robbins Johanna Spangenberg Jones

PEOPLE ARE OUR ASYMMETRIC ADVANTAGE During my time at West Point, I studied under the leadership of COL Dave Lyle and the OEMA team shaping policy reforms for the Army. In 2012, Tim Kane published "Bleeding Talent" which offered the first data-driven insights into the DoD's talent management crisis. In 2014, then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter initiated talent management reform efforts to shape the future military. The "Force of the Future" reports highlighted critical policy changes required to address recruitment and retention concerns. Fast forward to today, I'm on a 3-month leave from Salesforce to introduce GigEagle.mil, a groundbreaking tool for the Department of Defense. A big question remains: how does gig work contribute to retention? GigEagle streamlines mission support, making service more accessible and rewarding. By offering flexible paths to service, individuals are more likely to stay engaged, choosing meaningful contributions over exit strategies. A key consideration arises: Could an effortless route to good years in the IRR overshadow the select reserve? The dialogue shifts to enhancing military service experiences. The DoD should want to enhance the quality of service life for all members, fostering a culture that values talent over tolerance for bureaucracy. Improving service satisfaction directly impacts retention rates. Prioritizing talent retention based on capability, not tolerance for inefficiencies, is key. Data-driven insights can validate that enhancing service conditions attracts and retains top performers, shaping a more effective and resilient force. CEO, MilitaryHire | Chief Talent Officer, 75th Innovation Command | HR Tech | Human Capital | Defense Innovation
Last week, I joined former Congressman and Under Secretary of the Army Patrick J. Murphy at The White House to advance #employment initiatives for service members and #veterans. As Task Force Movement Committee Chairman for Guard and Reserve Programs, I had the opportunity to share insights and perspectives into the technical world of #recruiting and career transition with an emphasis on #cyber and national security jobs. I met with Jake Braun, Acting Principal National Cyber Director - The White House, and COL Jarrett Thomas, Director, U.S. Army Soldier For Life, to discuss ways that emerging United States Department of Defense talent technologies could soon integrate with private sector employment ecosystems to support career advancement for life. Without modern HR technologies and a deep understanding of the critical connection between military and civilian careers, we cannot sufficiently address problems driving our recruiting and retention crisis. Platforms such as #GigEagle, developed in partnership with Eightfold, the 75th U.S. Army Reserve Innovation Command, and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), could one day serve as the connective tissue between military and civilian careers. Some key problems we discussed: - Need to further reduce barriers to hiring veterans who sometimes lack college degrees despite having tremendous real-world experience and expertise in the cyber domain. - Too often, our nation’s thought leaders are focused on developing strategies without specific plans mapped to execution and funding. - We are still decades behind in our adoption of critical HR technologies and career training resources. - The national security implications are significant; entire sectors of our economy, such as critical infrastructure, lack modern #recruiting concepts, tools, and strategies. Task Force Movement is unique in its approach to connecting national thought leaders with resources on the ground to enable execution. We were excited to launch Task Force Movement Illinois last month with support from the Governor’s Office to bring these national frameworks to the State level. We also celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the GI Bill, one of the most significant investments in our service members in history! GigEagle’ initiative to ID short-term Pentagon talent is a new reality for the United States Department of Defense “We had overwhelming demand from Reservists trying to come into Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). They were saying, ‘Hey, I have all these other skills, I think I might be able to help you. How can I help?’ And at the time, we didn’t have roles or official billets to put them in,” Air Force Chuck Kubik, a project lead on GigEagle. “That’s why this (GigEagle) is so transformational and not just another jobs board. This is giving the ability to precisely identify target and engage talent that we just didn’t even know about,” he added. “If we get this right, we have the power, the potential to change the future of public service. That’s what’s so compelling here is that once you identify and engage people, you give people a whole new way to serve their country,”?said Mike McGinley, the GigEagle lead.
