At our annual “Thanks for Giving,” Gift of Life President & CEO Rick Hasz led the management team as they served our staff a Thanksgiving meal. For Rick and the team, it was another way to demonstrate their gratitude and appreciation for the staff’s outstanding effort all year in saving lives. Two young recipients and their families joined us this year and shared their transplant journeys. A life-saving kidney transplant freed Sebastian Foster from daily dialysis treatments and allows him to play sports and attend school. Cornea recipient Kacey Heisler can see again thanks to the generosity of her donor and their family. Thank you to both families for your work over the years in spreading the message that organ donation saves lives. Liz Serratore is a committed and tireless advocate for donation both on her unit, St. Luke’s Bethlehem MICU, and the entire St. Luke's University Health Network In her role as the MICU Clinical Education Specialist, Liz exemplifies advocacy for donation by identifying educational opportunities for her staff, facilitating organ referrals on her unit, coordinating case reviews, and identifying areas in which our teams can collaborate. She leads the St. Luke's University Health Network Donation Council and helps coordinate case reviews for the Bethlehem campus. All of Liz’s work is done with her patients and their families in mind. Additionally, Liz played a fundamental role in the organization of the first Donate Life Month celebration at St. Luke’s Bethlehem since the pandemic. This celebration included stories from donor families and transplant recipients and was attended by hospital staff from throughout the network. This event honored organ donors and their families and celebrated the lives that have been saved by organ donation. Join us in thanking Liz for being an Advocate in Action! Gift of Life Donor Program is proud to collaborate with our healthcare partners as we work to ensure every person waiting for a life-saving transplant receives the gift of life. As part of that commitment, Gift of Life recently hosted a Kidney Collaborative Regional Task Force meeting, an initiative aimed at increasing the number of kidney donors and transplants. The kidney is the most needed organ, with about 90,000 waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant across the country. Our Task Force members joined us at Gift of Life Howie's House. The agenda and discussions were focused on groundbreaking innovations along with best practices in donation and transplantation. Gift of Life was proud to attend the recent Donate Life America Conference. The annual event brings together hundreds of donation and transplantation professionals committed to increasing the number of donated organs, corneas and tissues available to save and heal lives. The conference was an excellent opportunity to connect with other organizations focused on saving lives through organ, tissue and cornea donation and share best practices.
