  • On #InternationalWomensDay, let's recognise the labour that keeps the world running. #Care sustains societies, supports well-being and enables both people and nature to thrive. ?? Yet, we live in a society of carelessness, where care work—especially unpaid care—is invisible, undervalued & unequally distributed. To build a just world, we must recognise, reduce & redistribute care work. ?? Recognise: Care is essential yet invisible in economic & policy frameworks. It must be valued as a public good, integrated into national accounts & supported through legal protections. ?? Reduce: The load of care work must be eased through strong public services, better infrastructure & social protection. Investments in universal care systems free up time & opportunities for all. ?? Redistribute: Care work shouldn’t fall overwhelmingly on women & girls. Households, states, businesses & communities must share responsibility—so that care is a collective, not individual, responsibility. The gendered division of care work is stark: ?? Women spend 3.2 times more hours than men on unpaid care. ?? In Latin America, they do 69%-86% of unpaid household work. ?? In sub-Saharan Africa, 86% of community health workers—mostly women—are unpaid. This is a structural issue, not an individual choice. Care is a public good, yet states, businesses & communities fail to take responsibility. ??? ?? Do you want to know more? ?? A Care-Led Transition to a Sustainable Future This publication explores how care is central to tackling the climate crisis & creating just economies. • ?? The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has just issued a much-awaited and historic statement: for the first time, it explicitly recognises that states must tackle inequality and guarantee rights through fair tax policies. Read the statement here: https://lnkd.in/dc-ZcQW6 The statement is ambitious and sets a new global standard: states must adopt progressive tax systems, eliminate tax privileges and avoid regressive taxes that hit those with the least the hardest. ?? Civil society has pushed for this recognition for years. Now, the Committee makes it explicitly clear that taxation is a matter of human rights and social justice. ????? The text also introduces an unprecedented and transformational recognition: international financial institutions also have human rights obligations. ???? They must assess how their recommendations affect states' ability to finance rights, particularly in the context of heavily indebted countries. The statement reflects years of work by civil society coalitions, particularly the Principles for Human Rights in Fiscal Policy (Iniciativa por los Principios de derechos humanos en la Política Fiscal), drafted between 2018 and 2020 by the Initiative for Human Rights in Fiscal Policy, of which we are a member. ?? Learn more about the Initiative here: https://lnkd.in/dduUvfUd With this recognition, the legal conversation on taxation and rights takes on new strength. The challenge now is to ensure that these innovative normative standards translate into tangible action by states to ensure the economic, social and cultural rights of their population. ??
