Fletcher Professor of Law at Boston University, spoke with Global Health Now, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s publication, about how a better business model is needed to prevent the collapse of the antibiotic development pipeline. Investments into push and pull incentives have increased in recent years, but still lag behind necessary levels to bring enough new antibiotics to the market. Prof. Outterson emphasized that antibiotics should be valued based on their benefit to society rather than their volume of sales. ?? CARB-X graduate Pattern Bioscience receives support from Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to further develop its rapid #diagnostic to determine the effectiveness of antibiotics against specific bacteria. Rapid diagnostics are vital for improving the treatment of drug-resistant infections, as current laboratory testing can take days to reach a diagnosis. #TB is one of the main drivers of the growing global antimicrobial resistance crisis as drug-resistant TB is both difficult and expensive to treat. A new TB vaccine is urgently needed to stop infections in the first place. This AMR R&D update from GHTC is a timely reminder of how far we've come – and how much work remains.
