The physiological changes that happen as we age can make it difficult for older adults to maintain proper dental care and hygiene. Older adults are a growing patient demographic for dental care professionals, as people aged 65+ are one of the leading age groups in the U.S. As we age, our teeth experience normal wear and tear from chewing, grinding and biting but our overall health may affect our ability to care for our teeth too. Most people over the age of 65 have at least one chronic condition and this can limit mobility, strength, vision, hearing, reflexes, and cognition - in turn, causing dental problems. -Mobility & Strength: Similar to other areas of the body, our teeth begin to lose their strength as we age. When oral muscle strength decreases, usually we'll begin eating softer foods, which means we stop using the muscles in our mouth - creating a cycle of more decreased oral muscle strength. The decline of your overall physical strength can also make it hard to brush your teeth, floss, or use transportation to get to dental care services. -Vision & Hearing: Visual impairments affect the way that older adults assess the need for dental care. The presence of cataracts, glaucoma, or other issues can make the detection of dental problems uneasy, while hearing loss can interfere with proper communication with dental professionals and caregivers. -Reflexes & Cognition: Older adults with severe cognitive disabilities, including dementia, are at increased risk for dental issues because of decreased ability to engage in home oral care. The progressive deterioration of cognitive ability can cause difficulty in following instructions after an oral surgery, remembering to brush/floss daily or proper denture care. #agingdentalcare #olderamericansmonth #dental #dentalcare #dentist

It's time to debunk a common myth: Can You Really Get a Cold from Being Cold? Many of us have heard the age-old myth that being out in the cold can lead to catching a cold. But is there any truth to it? ?? The answer is… not quite! ?? Understanding the Common Cold The common cold is caused by viruses, primarily rhinoviruses, and not by temperature alone. However, during colder months, people tend to gather indoors, often in close proximity, which increases the chances of virus transmission. So, while you won't catch a cold just by stepping outside in the winter chill, your environment plays a crucial role! Combatting Those Myths! It's essential to debunk these myths to better understand how to protect ourselves. Maintaining good hygiene practices—like frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals—are key defenses against colds, regardless of the season. #CommonCold #HealthMyths #StayHealthy #ColdSeason #WellnessAwareness

?? **Understanding Bladder Health** Our bladder plays a crucial role in our overall well-being, yet it often goes unnoticed until problems arise. As a reservoir for urine, it helps manage waste and contributes to our body's fluid balance. Maintaining bladder health is essential for both physical comfort and quality of life. This pear-shaped muscular sac is responsible for storing urine before it’s expelled from the body. Typically, the adult bladder can hold about 400-600 mL of urine, but its flexibility allows for a range of capacities! ?? The bladder works in harmony with other parts of the urinary system. When it fills up, nerve signals alert us that it's time to find a restroom. The muscles in the bladder then contract to release urine through the urethra. This intricate process highlights not only the bladder's essential function but also the importance of maintaining urinary health. ?? **Hydration is Key** One of the simplest ways to support your bladder is through proper hydration. Drinking enough water helps dilute urine, reducing the risk of infections and irritations. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day, but remember that individual needs may vary based on activity level and climate. ?? **Mind Your Diet** What we eat can significantly affect bladder health. Incorporating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides essential nutrients. Conversely, be mindful of caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, as these can irritate the bladder and lead to discomfort. ??♂? **Stay Active** Regular physical activity not only benefits your overall health but also strengthens pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder. Simple exercises like Kegels can enhance bladder control and reduce the risk of incontinence. Prioritizing your bladder health is crucial for a fulfilling life. Let’s spread awareness about this vital aspect of our wellness journey! #BladderHealth #Wellness #HealthyLiving #Nutrition #Hydration #UrinaryHealth #HealthyBladder #HydrationMatters #FluidBalance #UrinarySystem

?? **Understanding GERD: More Common Than You Think** Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects millions of people worldwide, causing discomfort and impacting daily life. It occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation. While it can affect anyone, certain groups—such as pregnant women and individuals with obesity—are at a higher risk. ?? **Nourishing Choices: Foods That Help** What you eat can significantly influence GERD symptoms. Incorporating alkaline foods like bananas, melons, and oatmeal can help neutralize stomach acid. Additionally, lean proteins and green vegetables are excellent choices that promote digestive health. On the flip side, it’s wise to limit spicy foods, citrus fruits, and fatty items that may trigger discomfort. ?? **Exploring Treatments: Finding Relief** Fortunately, there are various treatments available for GERD. Over-the-counter antacids can provide quick relief, while prescription medications may be necessary for chronic cases. Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, elevating the head during sleep, and avoiding late-night meals can also play a crucial role in managing symptoms. ?? **Take Charge of Your Health** If you or someone you know is struggling with GERD, understanding the condition is the first step towards effective management. Did you know that the CDC recommends adults consume at least 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit each day? This guideline helps ensure we get the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber our bodies need to thrive. ?? **Why Fruits Matter** Fruits are nature's candy, packed with antioxidants that combat free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. They also contribute to heart health, aid digestion, and help maintain a healthy weight. Simply put, incorporating a variety of fruits into your daily routine can lead to a happier, healthier you! ?? **Best Fruits for Optimal Health** While all fruits have their benefits, some stand out for their exceptional nutritional profiles. Berries like blueberries and strawberries are loaded with antioxidants, while bananas provide a great source of potassium. Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits are fantastic for immune support due to their high vitamin C content.
