With the International Maritime Organization's MEPC 83 meeting approaching in April, discussions made one thing clear: the future of shipping lies in fully renewable e-fuels. A new report launched alongside the event highlights a bold reality—green fuel producers are ready to supply 10% of marine fuels by 2030. LNG and biofuels are not the solution; scaling up renewables is. As Eddie Rich, Vice-Chair of GRA and CEO of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), emphasised at the roundtable, making this transition happen requires ambitious action today. ?? The Green Hydrogen Organisation welcomes Minister Mike Kane’s visit to the Fortescue Green Pioneer and the UK government’s efforts to promote green shipping. Decarbonising the maritime industry is not just possible—it’s necessary. As GH2 CEO Jonas Moberg puts it: "Today we know how to run ships on green fuels, which the Green Pioneer demonstrates. Green ammonia comes from renewable electricity, water, and nitrogen in the air we breathe. We now just need the IMO, supported by governments like the UK, to put the rules in place to make green fuels competitive." Now is the time for bold action. We urge the UK government to rally support for the proposal submitted by the International Chamber of Shipping, which has wide buy in from governments, research institutes and campaigning organisations. The country has recently been making significant progress in its decarbonisation journey. ?? Trinidad and Tobago’s 2022 Green Hydrogen strategy?aim to leverage its existing oil and gas infrastructure, operational expertise, and renewable energy potential to transition into a green hydrogen economy. ?? Charting the Course to Net-Zero Shipping ?? Today, GH2 and the SASHA Coalition hosted the International Maritime Decarbonisation Roundtable & Visit Aboard Fortescue’s Green Pioneer—a timely discussion as the IMO advances its commitment to cutting GHG emissions by “20% striving for 30% by 2030” and “70% striving for 80% by 2040” (compared to 2008 levels). Positioned between the February 2025 Intersessional Working Group on GHG Emissions and the upcoming Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting, our discussions focused on key pathways to net-zero shipping. ?? New Report Release: Green Fuel Producers Are Ready to Provide 10% of Marine Fuels by 2030 The report finds that meeting this goal will require 65 MTPA of green ammonia and assesses policy options under discussion at the IMO, including: ? A carbon levy ? A global fuel standard with flexibility mechanisms ? A bridging option to accelerate adoption Industry leaders highlight that green fuels are ready to scale, while raising concerns that biofuels are not scalable and that emissions from LNG and biofuels remain too high for true decarbonisation. Panama's 2023 green hydrogen strategy (ENHIVE) seeks to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen (H2V) and its derivatives by capitalizing on its geographic location, renewable energy potential, and logistical infrastructure. The strategy aligns with Panama's commitments under the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7, focusing on affordable and clean energy.? ?? To promote sustainable and equitable growth for over four million Panamanians, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has approved $240 million in financing through a Development Policy Operation (DPO). This funding aims to support the ongoing public policy efforts established by the Government of the Republic of Panama in facilitating a fair energy transition amid climate change.?? ?
