We’re pleased to announce that the Netherlands, a founding GFDT partner, is expanding its commitment to support active mobility initiatives. Known for its leadership in sustainable, people-centered transport, the Netherlands’ increased support for GFDT was announced today at an event at #COP29. The additional funding will strengthen GFDT's efforts to promote #cycling, walking, and other forms of active mobility—key enablers in the shift toward clean, livable cities. ? Active mobility not only reduces emissions but also fosters healthier, more vibrant communities. With the ongoing partnership of the Netherlands' Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, GFDT can advance scalable #activemobility solutions, accelerating the transition to greener and more resilient #transport systems worldwide. A World Bank program to accelerate innovation and investment toward climate-smart mobility solutions.
关于我们
The Global Facility to Decarbonize Transport (GFDT) is a multi-donor trust fund administered by the World Bank that aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the global transport sector by 2050. Our funding, knowledge, and project preparation support will enable low and middle-income countries to build safe, modern, inclusive and resilient transport systems that are not emissions-intensive. Our vision is a world where low and middle-income countries do not have to choose between development and climate action. With the right investments in high-quality public transport, well-connected cities, non-motorized transport options, and cleaner technologies, achieving development progress and climate targets can be mutually reinforcing. Our impact will extend beyond transport decarbonization to benefit people who are disconnected from jobs, essential services, and opportunities, including women and those living in rural areas.

We are thrilled that the GFDT-funded "Guide to Mobility for Livable Pacific Cities" has been launched. Congratulations to the team for bringing this important work to fruition.
The Guide to Mobility for Livable Pacific Cities is Live! Thank you to everyone involved in making this possible. See Part I below, or download at this link https://lnkd.in/gempSC7g ?Part I is primarily written for top government decision-makers and representatives of civil society and development organizations who are tasked with defining strategies for the future development of Pacific cities. https://lnkd.in/gempSC7g ? Part II is written for working-level technical practitioners who seek to understand and implement strategies developed under Part I. It provides detailed technical data, reference information, and guidance for implementation of the strategies. https://lnkd.in/g26Dpf3a WHY IT MATTERS ?The Guide is the first of its kind for the Pacific and will be an essential reference document for all governments, development partners and engineering consulting firms ?This Guide can catalyze a coordinated, region-wide investment program in making Pacific Cities more livable by 2030

GFDT is pleased to announce that the World Bank approved the first phase ($150 million loan) of a 10-year program to transform urban mobility in Lima. A GFDT grant in 2023 prepared the technical and conceptual groundwork for this long-term investment, which will drive progress in transport decarbonization both in Lima and across Peru and the region. ? The initial $150 million loan will implement modern traffic light systems, an automated traffic violation detection system, 50 kilometers of bike lanes, traffic calming zones in five municipal districts, and a range of other transport improvements.

We are pleased to see the launch of the Breakthrough Agenda Report 2024. The report provides critical insights into the progress being made in decarbonizing key high-emission sectors -- including road transport -- and mentions the World Bank, and the Global Facility to Decarbonize Transport, as key vehicles for change.
This morning industry leaders will be gathering virtually to launch the 2024 Breakthrough Agenda Report. ?? The report, written by the International Energy Agency (IEA), High-Level Climate Champions, and CGIAR, provides critical insights into the progress being made - and the challenges still faced - in decarbonising key high-emission sectors: Road Transport, Steel, Hydrogen, Power, Agriculture, Buildings, and Cement. The report highlights the progress seen, as well as areas that need development - and how this can be achieved. This sets the scene for the emissions challenges governments will need to urgently address as part of #COP29 in November. Keep a look out for insights in the coming weeks as we share key findings across all sectors, focusing on making clean energy technologies more affordable and accessible for everyone. We all know that promoting more walking and cycling -- as opposed to driving -- is key to create greener and healthier cities. Yet in many countries around the world, pedestrians and cyclists face serious risks. To change this, we must prioritize investments in active transport: wider sidewalks, safer bike lanes, better street lighting, and more traffic calming measures like speed humps. The World Bank, through initiatives such as the Global Facility to Decarbonize Transport and Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4All), is committed to creating safer, more inclusive streetscapes where pedestrians and cyclists can move freely without fear. Let’s invest in solutions that save lives and make cities better for all. #SafeStreets #SustainableTransport #Cycling #UrbanMobility

To celebrate 2024 UN #WorldBicycleDay (Monday, June 3), the World Bank’s Transport Global Practice hosted an event to promote cycling infrastructure as an important tool for improving mobility, human health, and the environment, and to highlight the link between cycling and the World Bank’s mission of ending poverty on a livable planet. A number of GFDT-funded activities, such as "Informing Climate-Smart Transport Investments in Lima, Peru", have provided detailed guidance to governments on how to improve cycling infrastructure. Learn more on the Grantees tab of the GFDT website: worldbank.org/gfdt
Today, UN #WorldBicycleDay, is an important moment to recognize the many reasons to fall in love with cycling: it’s a simple, affordable, and environmentally-friendly way to get around. Whether it’s part of your daily commute or part of your childhood experience, almost everyone has a personal connection with bicycles. Personally, I have very fond memories of watching the Tour de France from my family’s home in the Pyrenees mountains. We were so pleased to welcome Leszek Sibilski, founder of World Bicycle Day, at an event last week to mark the occasion. He emphasized the importance of the World Bank’s work to expand bicycle infrastructure in more developing countries. This is something that gained a stronger foothold during the pandemic, with many cities increasing demand for dedicated bike lanes combined with larger public transport projects. For more on how cycling – and active mobility more broadly – can help revitalize cities, take a look at a blog and report from my colleague Winnie Wang. https://lnkd.in/dJVxMEiN
