A native of Somerville, New Jersey, Arabella Griffith Barlow was the wife of Union General Francis C. Barlow. Arabella joined the U.S. Sanitary Commission as a nurse in 1862 and assisted in the treatment of wounded and ill soldiers. She came to Gettysburg following her husband’s wounding on July 1, 1863, and helped nurse him back to health in the following months. The next summer, she contracted typhoid fever while treating ailing Union soldiers in Virginia and died on July 27, 1864. To hear more stories of selflessness and how we can use them to inspire others to be responsible citizens and better leaders, check out the Gettysburg Foundation’s Higher Ground Leadership program: https://ow.ly/N3MS50UbZVI ??: Library of Congress #Gettysburg #History #CivilWar #LeadershipDevelopment

We recently hosted young men from Philadelphia-area high schools for a "Run Free" event with The Ahmaud Arbery Foundation. The students went through three experiential learning modules throughout the weekend where they talked about Black leaders from the past, social justice, and positive leadership. They also traveled to the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital and participated in a team building exercise. The Gettysburg Foundation was honored to participate in the 2024 Dedication Day commemorative event in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Since 1938, the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania, in partnership with the Gettysburg National Military Park, the Gettysburg Foundation, and Gettysburg College, has commemorated President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery on its anniversary date of Nov. 19. #DedicationDay #Gettysburg #CivilWar #History

A cohort of our APS B.E.S.T. Academy mentees were able to travel to Washington, DC and Gettysburg, PA as part of an annual enrichment field trip with the Gettysburg Foundation! Our mentees saw the several great national monuments and historic places including Soldiers National Cemetery, Gettysburg National Military Park Museum, the Lincoln Cemetery, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture! This trip, which saw upwards of twenty (20) mentees and chaperons travel to two out of state destinations, was funded largely by unrestricted funding provided by our corporate partners and social fundraising patrons. We thank you for your generosity towards the children we serve! As an additional added treat, our Chairman Sid Barron and the team with Asbury Automotive Group secured custom travel luggage for each traveler, which helped these young men travel in style as they flew on Delta Air Lines ——— #Emerging100ATL #MentoringMatters

    • “One of the criticisms I've faced over the years is that I'm not aggressive enough or assertive enough, or maybe somehow, because I'm empathetic, it means I'm weak. I totally rebel against that. I refuse to believe that you cannot be both compassionate and strong.” - Jacinda Ardern
