Tan Yunxian (1461–1554) was a pioneering female physician during the Ming Dynasty in China. At a time when medicine was a male-dominated field, she defied societal norms and became a respected doctor specializing in gynecology and obstetrics. Born into a scholarly and medical family, Tan Yunxian was trained in traditional Chinese medicine by her grandparents. She focused on treating women’s illnesses, which male doctors often could not address due to gender restrictions. She documented her medical knowledge and experiences in a book titled Miscellaneous Records of a Female Doctor (女医杂言, Nǚ Yī Zá Yán), one of the earliest known medical texts written by a woman in China. Her work provides valuable insight into Ming-era medical practices and the unique challenges women faced in healthcare. She emphasized treating ailments like menstrual disorders, postpartum complications, and infertility using herbal medicine and acupuncture. Tan Yunxian’s contributions were remarkable because she not only practiced medicine but also recorded her knowledge, ensuring it was passed down. She remains an important historical figure in both medical and feminist history. https://lnkd.in/g9wgmttA

The future of STEM is looking brighter and more inclusive than ever! ? ? A fascinating study shows a shift in how young minds perceive scientists. In the '60s and '70s, less than 1% of students drew female scientists. But by 2016, that number had soared to 34%! ??? ? This change shows the incredible impact of representation. When kids see women excelling in STEM, they can picture themselves in those careers too. ? ? We're building a future where diversity thrives and the faces of science reflect the world we live in. ????? “It may take time, but don’t give up. There are always people willing to support you—find them and walk with them. Be a leader in science, and your impact will be lasting.” — Dr. Jackline Odhiambo, a physician, is living her childhood dream. https://lnkd.in/gEUSVw2p

A great mentor is someone who provides guidance, support, and wisdom to help others grow personally and professionally. They are experienced, approachable, and invested in their mentee’s success. A great mentor: Listens actively – They understand their mentee’s goals, challenges, and aspirations. Shares knowledge – They offer insights based on experience, helping their mentee avoid pitfalls. Encourages growth – They challenge their mentee to step outside their comfort zone. Leads by example – They model integrity, resilience, and continuous learning. Provides constructive feedback – They offer honest, actionable advice without being discouraging. Supports, but doesn’t spoon-feed – They empower their mentee to think critically and make decisions. Acts as a connector – They introduce their mentee to valuable networks and opportunities. A great mentor helps their mentee become the best version of themselves. At MAGIC, we focus on providing middle and high school girls, who are interested in a STEM area, with a knowledge of tools and resources available for them to be successful. We do that through our amazing mentors who volunteer their time, offer their expertise, and lend a hand (and often times an arm) to the next generation of women in STEM. Thank you to all our MAGICal Mentors. https://getmagic.org/ #Grateful #WomenMentorsInSTEM #LeadersInSTEM

An amazing, extraordinary story! Thank you Tu Youyou for not just changing science, but changing the world for the better.
Tu Youyou embarked on an extraordinary mission—to find a cure for malaria. She delved deep into the ancient wisdom of traditional Chinese medicines, finding a powerful anti-malarial that had long been hidden in time. In an act of bravery, she turned to herself as the first subject, risking her own wellbeing to accelerate the drug's development. Because of her remarkable ingenuity and selflessness, we now have a life-saving drug that has been used to treat millions of people, dramatically decreasing the mortality rate. Her legacy is not merely one of scientific discovery; it is a testament to the boundless human spirit. Discover more: https://bit.ly/2X17ODo
