President, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation | AI Policy Expert | Independent Board Director | Building Human Opportunity in a Digital World

AI systems built without women's voices miss half the world and actively distort reality for everyone. On International Women's Day - and every day - this truth demands our attention. After more than two decades working at the intersection of technological innovation and human rights, I've observed a consistent pattern: systems designed without inclusive input inevitably encode the inequalities of the world we have today, incorporating biases in data, algorithms, and even policy. Building technology that works requires our shared participation as the foundation of effective innovation. The data is sobering: women represent only 30% of the AI workforce and a mere 12% of AI research and development positions according to UNESCO's Gender and AI Outlook. This absence shapes the technology itself. And a UNESCO study on Large Language Models (LLMs) found persistent gender biases - where female names were disproportionately linked to domestic roles, while male names were associated with leadership and executive careers. UNESCO's @women4EthicalAI initiative, led by the visionary and inspiring Gabriela Ramos and Dr. Alessandra Sala, is fighting this pattern by developing frameworks for non-discriminatory AI and pushing for gender equity in technology leadership. Their work extends the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, a powerful global standard centering human rights in AI governance. Today's decision is whether AI will transform our world into one that replicates today's inequities or helps us build something better. Examine your AI teams and processes today. Where are the gaps in representation affecting your outcomes? Document these blind spots, set measurable inclusion targets, and build accountability systems that outlast good intentions. The technology we create reflects who creates it - and gives us a path to a better world. #InternationalWomensDay #AI #GenderBias #EthicalAI #WomenInAI #UNESCO #ArtificialIntelligence The Patrick J. Project Evident is proud to announce the launch of our OutcomesAI team's newly published report, "Funding the Future: Grantmaker Strategies in AI Investment," authored by Sarah Di Troia. This research examines the current state of funders' approach to grantmaking for AI implementation among nonprofits. As philanthropies consider the opportunities and challenges in how they approach #AI, the findings of this report are informative in answering the question that's been on many of our minds: How do we balance innovation with responsibility? We want to extend a big thank you to Schmidt Sciences, Google.org, and Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies who provided support for this critical work, and to all of our research participants for your partnership and insights. The report provides insights for both funders and practitioners with key takeaways and actionable recommendations. The future of nonprofit work isn’t purely technological or exclusively human - it’s a thoughtful integration of both that amplifies each organization’s unique contribution to creating a more just and equitable world. The most successful nonprofit adopters of AI will be those that: Maintain focus on mission alignment in all technology decisions. Center the needs and perspectives of the communities they serve. Approach AI as a complement to - not a replacement for - human judgment and connection. Commit to ongoing learning and adaptation as both the technology and its implications evolve. What are your thoughts? How are you implementing AI tools into your organization's tech stack? #AIForGood #EthicalAI #AIBiasMitigation #EthicalAIAdoption

Long overdue, but we've redesigned Kweet's website. As a UX/UI designer, releasing the version 1 painful - it was ugly, and I knew it. However, sticking to my “Done is better than perfect” mantra, I quickly drafted our mission & vision and the website went live. Until we got too many “So what does Kweet do?!” from our potential users. A lot of misconceptions arose around what Kweet was - from a Chrome extension (ew, no!) to some kind of an instagram add-on. Kweet isn’t neither, so we had to revamp everything, quickly. Here is what we’ve done: ???Explaining → Showing Our old website talked about features. Now, we?show the product in action - the product design itself isn’t final, but it’s better to show something in beta than nothing. ???Long texts → Say less If you know me, you know I talk a lot. You can see “Our Story” is still quite long, but I believe it matters. Everything else? Cut cut cut. ???Ending with “Our Story” → Ending with a CTA Our final CTA - “Join our waitlist” now has a dedicated section - and a pretty one, I should say. Such an obvious move, but I somehow missed it for the version 1. ???Blog’s imagery is Pexels → Blog’s imagery is quirky Again, adding a personality is always a good idea. I struggled with our generic imagery for the blog posts until I allowed myself to have fun. Now, Kweet’s blog is illustrated with screengrabs of iconic movies. Check out our fresh website:?getkweet.com?and let me know what you think! #Redesign #BuildInPublic #TechForGood #AIForGood

A huge milestone for Kweet: we have onboarded our first user, a fantastic nonprofit working on equitable education. “I don’t want to be replaced by someone who uses AI be more efficient in their work. I want to BECOME that person!” is a quote that warmed my heart. AI adoption is essential for the nonprofit sector, and we are so proud to be working on this cause 24/7. When it comes to #fundraising, one of the biggest mistakes nonprofits make is?only fundraising when they need money.?No plan, no schedule - just last-minute, urgent appeals. But there’s a better way.?A fundraising calendar keeps cash flowing all year long.?Instead of chasing donors during “crunch time,” you’ll have a steady stream of revenue every month. With a calendar in place, you’ll: ??Never miss key fundraising dates?(like GivingTuesday or end-of-year appeals) ??Spread out revenue?so you aren’t stuck in “feast or famine” cycles ??Run smoother campaigns?with plenty of prep time This guide will show you how to create a rock-solid fundraising calendar for the year. By the end, you’ll have a month-by-month plan to hit your fundraising goals. https://lnkd.in/etBe_SFx #NonprofitFunding #NonprofitStrategy #NonprofitMarketing

Writing fundraising appeals is tough. Most organizations struggle with the same question: What makes donors actually give? What should you say? How long should it be? Should you tell a story or focus on stats? After studying thousands of successful appeals, the answer becomes clear – it’s not about statistics or fancy writing. It’s about making a genuine connection. Here’s what a winning donor appeal does: Grabs attention.?(Most people won’t read past the first 2 lines.) Triggers empathy.?(People give when they feel something.) Presents a clear problem.?(If the problem isn’t clear, people won’t act.) Offers a solution.?(Donors need to see how?they?can solve the problem.) Ends with a bold, clear ask.?(If you don’t ask them to donate, they won’t.) If your appeal has these 5 elements, you’re 90% of the way there.
