Hurricane Milton is gaining strength fast and could become a major storm. NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters report that the storm’s pressure has dropped to 991 mb—a clear sign it’s intensifying. Winds are already reaching 63 mph at the surface.

As of today, October 6, 2024, Gov. DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in Florida, covering 51 counties. (Read E.O. 24-215, here) FDOT has issued evacuation notices for residents in the path of the storm, and emphasized that residents should evacuate as soon as possible, and further, that FDOT is preparing for the largest evacuation in the state of Florida’s since hurricane Irma in 2017.

Milton is currently moving southeast, slightly further south than originally expected, but it’s forecast to turn northeast by Tuesday and head toward Florida. This shift means changes to the predicted path are likely, and Mexico has already issued a Tropical Storm Warning for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.

No matter what, we’re looking at a potentially dangerous situation for the Florida west coast by mid-week. Storm surge, heavy winds, and flooding are all on the table, and we need to be prepared.
