Garner analyzed the accuracy of health plan provider directories and discovered that only 27% of the time they contain information needed to reach a provider. ?? As a result, 3 out of 4 patients struggle to book an appointment—fueling frustration and delaying treatment. But that’s not all. We discovered other limitations, like how most provider directories include only 23 specialties, despite patients needing over 82 subspecialties. “A lot of folks say, ‘I want my employees to have the highest quality care, so I'm happy to pay for anything.’ But actually that does a disservice to your employees. To combat costs, employers are turning to value-driven health plans like tiered networks and variable copays, but there's a big problem: bad directory data. These types of plans require employees to rely on health plan provider directories that are notoriously inaccurate. Only 27% of the time do health plan directories contain the accurate information needed to reach a provider, creating frustration and further barriers to finding care. ?? Under broad network plans, this wasn’t a major issue; only 11% of employees relied on these directories. ?? Under value-driven plans, that reliance jumps 6x to 65% as employees use these directories to avoid paying significant out-of-pocket costs. ??
