Upcoming Waste Legislation: Convenience stores must act now ?? ? New UK legislation coming into force on 31 March will soon require businesses to separate food waste, limiting general waste collections to just 5kg per week. This change will have a significant impact on convenience retailers, many of whom are still unaware of the looming shift. In fact, according to Convenience Store, only 1% of businesses are fully aware of the upcoming recycling law changes ?? For convenience retailers, the challenge is clear: pay rising costs to have food waste removed or invest in solutions that prevent waste in the first place. The latter isn’t just more cost-effective - it’s also better for the environment and can unlock new revenue opportunities ?? At Gander, we help retailers cut food waste at the source. Our SaaS technology ensures that surplus food is sold before it becomes waste, reducing disposal costs and supporting a circular economy ?? With this new law comes into force next month, convenience retailers must take action now ?? . Those who proactively reduce waste will avoid hefty removal fees and enhance their sustainability credentials - a win for both business and the planet ?? Are you ready for the change? Let's talk ?? ?? Ian Bacon #WasteLegislation #Convenience #IndependentRetailers #FoodWaste #RetailTech #Sustainability #Gander

?? Investing in food waste management: A practical response to rising National Insurance contributions With rising costs ?? in the grocery sector, retailers ?? face tough decisions on how to absorb or offset these challenges. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has warned that increased National Insurance (NI) contributions could lead to higher store prices, highlighting the need for innovative solutions. One key opportunity ?? lies in food waste management. By investing in SaaS-based technologies like Gander ?? , retailers can mitigate cost increases while driving footfall, improving margins, and reducing environmental impact ?? ?? Turning food waste into an asset Food waste presents both sustainability ?? and economic ?? challenges. Disposing of unsold food wastes resources and incurs costs. However, real-time technology like Gander ?? transforms food waste into an opportunity. The platform highlights reduced-to-clear items to thousands of nearby shoppers via a live feed, ensuring customers are aware of yellow-sticker deals as they happen. This drives footfall, boosts sales, and reduces waste ?? Beyond environmental ?? benefits, Gander ?? enhances operational efficiency and shopper satisfaction. Items sold from shelves are automatically updated on the feed, eliminating customer frustration over unavailable deals. This precision reduces waste and strengthens customer loyalty. ?? Balancing rising costs with customer value As the BRC notes, increased NI contributions could force retailers to raise prices, straining shoppers already managing higher living costs. Adopting solutions like Gander ?? creates new revenue streams by turning potential waste into a sales driver. Highlighting a commitment to reduce waste and offering discounted food positions stores as community-focused businesses, aligning with customers' desires to save money and support sustainability. ?? Why now is the time to act The phrase "waste not, want not" has never been more relevant. Rising costs make it critical for retailers ?? to safeguard margins while delivering value to customers. Gander ?? offers a strategic response, positioning retailers for long-term success in a competitive market. By embracing innovative food waste solutions, grocery stores can strengthen their businesses, adopt stronger community connections, and contribute to climate change efforts ?? . They also gain control over rising operational costs, ensuring competitiveness and resilience amid ongoing challenges. Food waste isn’t just a problem to solve – it’s an opportunity to lead ?? . ?? Gander welcomes WRAP’s Courtauld Commitment and Food Waste Reduction Roadmap reports ?? At Gander, we welcome the release of WRAP’s latest Courtauld Commitment 2030 Annual Progress Report and Food Waste Reduction Roadmap Progress Report, which highlight critical steps being taken to combat food waste ?? , greenhouse gas emissions, and water ?? usage across the industry. While progress has been made ?? , it’s clear that more decisive and collaborative action ?? is required to meet the ambitious targets set for 2030. The reports highlight the need for widespread adoption of WRAP’s Target, Measure, Act approach, a cornerstone of the Food Waste Reduction Roadmap ? . Yet, too many businesses have still to commit. As an industry, we cannot afford to delay – urgency to address food waste has never been greater. ? Driving change with technology ???? Gander ?? continues to lead the charge in reducing food waste ?? by providing retailers with innovative tools to highlight reduced-to-clear food items in real-time. By using our platform ?? , stores can not only cut waste but also bring in new shoppers ?? , improve margins, and support their local communities. This aligns directly with the principles laid out in WRAP’s Roadmap, helping businesses measure, monitor, and take action on food waste. We know that food waste contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. ??? Tackling this issue at the store level - where food is often lost due to expiration - is a vital step in creating a sustainable and circular food system. By reducing in-store food waste, retailers can also support their ESG goals, improve efficiency, and build stronger relationships with customers who increasingly value sustainable practices. ?? The call for faster, bolder action WRAP’s reports are a stark reminder that the pace of change must accelerate. ? The Courtauld Commitment sets ambitious targets for 2030, and as an industry, we need to think bigger and act faster. At Gander, we urge grocery retailers, suppliers, and the wider food industry to embrace innovative technologies and collaborative strategies that can make these targets achievable. ?? The challenges are complex, but the opportunities for impact are immense. By working together, leveraging technology, and committing to tangible goals, we can reduce ?? food waste, protect the environment ?? , and make a meaningful difference for future generations. ?? ?? Let’s make 2025 the year the grocery retail industry unites to tackle food waste with the urgency it demands. The time to act is now. ?? Cutting food waste this Christmas ?? Plans for the holiday season are well underway for most people, with shopping lists brimming with festive staples like turkey, stuffing, sprouts, Christmas pudding, and brandy butter. ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? The desire for a perfect Christmas often means households spend more ?? on food and drink in December than at any other time of the year. We want to have a great time, impress our guests, and avoid the fear of running out of food. ?? However, that fear can translate into food waste. ?? Statistics show that an incredible amount of edible food is thrown away during the festive season. For example, one source (Business Waste) estimates that the UK generates 270,000 extra tonnes of food waste at Christmas – the equivalent of seven million bins full of food. While this is shocking, much of the waste is avoidable. ???, ??? ??? ??? ,??? ??? ??? With Christmas upon us and multiple festive dinners ?? to prepare, careful planning becomes essential to cutting down on waste. Tailoring meal plans to suit guests and considering how many need to be catered for, how many adults and children, their appetites, and any dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, can significantly reduce leftovers. ?? When leftovers ?? ?? ?? are inevitable, it’s opportunity to embrace creative ways to make the most of them. There’s the obligatory cold cuts, pies, soups, bubble & squeak and turkey curry but perhaps being a bit more adventurous could be the answer to using up those leftovers in a way that doesn’t make the family groan. ?? ?? For extra inspiration, freeze what you can, or another thoughtful way to reduce waste is to share surplus food with elderly neighbours who could be alone during the holidays. ?? ?? ??? ?? Reducing food waste at Christmas time doesn’t mean being a Scrooge. It’s about being mindful of what we buy, cook, and consume. Each small effort adds up to make a big difference. ?? ?? From all of us at Gander, wishing you a happy, joyful, and waste-free Christmas! ?? ?? The Earthshot Prize – an inspiration to us all ?? ? Inspiration is a brilliant thing. It spurs us on to be brave and try something new, and there’s nothing more inspirational for us than the winners of The Earthshot Prize. ? ?? The five 2024 Earthshot Prize winners were announced earlier this month at an awards ceremony in Cape Town and were chosen from a shortlist of 15 finalists. ? ?? Those five winners have been awarded £1m each to accelerate and scale their game-changing environmental solutions ?? ? ? In the Protect and Restore Nature category, the winner was the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative from Kazakhstan. This impressive project is working to save the critically endangered Saiga antelope from extinction. ? ? The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) from Ghana won the Clean Out Air category. GAYO ‘s Zero Waste Model has been designed to build infrastructure to support circular waste management across Africa. The Organization is determined to extend its reach from Ghana to many more countries across the continent including Nigeria and Kenya. ? ? In the Revive Our Oceans category, High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC) was the winner. HAC found that while governments across the globe spoke about biodiversity protection, many lacked concrete pledges or, if they did, they often failed to reach them. HAC is pushing governments to commit and act to protect 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. It has already signed up 120 countries to the ‘30×30’ target, doubling its signatories since 2021. ? ? Keep It Cool (KIC) from Kenya took away the prize in the Build a Waste-Free World category for its sustainable refrigeration and smart distribution solutions for smaller farmers and fishers. Inadequate cold storage and transport systems mean that many farmers and fisherfolk are losing produce every day. KIC’s system helps extend the shelf life of their produce, reduces spoilage and creates more stable incomes for these people. ? ? In the Fix Our Climate category Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS) from the US won the prize for its “simple, safe and scalable” technology to capture waste heat and convert it into electricity. The judges identified this as a game-changing solution for heavy industries like cement and steel production. ? ?? Some of these solutions are quite technical, others much simpler, but they all need one thing: people with vision, drive and determination to get them up and running ?? ? ?? We send our congratulations to all The Earthshot Prize finalists and winners; you are a true inspiration ?? ??
