Helping Companies Grow Their Experimentation Culture

Watching Yellowstone on Paramount+ comes with its fair share of ads. They've been trying to get this right (or not) for a while.... but it got the wheels turning: how does a brand even know if I’m truly engaged (I'm usually not outside of rage clicking fast-forward)—or if I’ve already checked out and moved on to scroll instagram? And more importantly, how do they figure out if that ad actually influenced my decision to buy? Eppo’s Geolift is designed to solve these mysteries. It’s setting a new benchmark for incrementality testing, empowering brands to confidently measure real marketing impact. With Geolift, brands can address questions like: ? Where should I allocate marketing spend when data from my warehouse, ad partners, and web analytics just doesn’t align? ? How can we precisely measure the impact of a product launch across different regions? ? What portion of sales uplift can we directly link to our campaign, while factoring in outside influences and existing trends? Read our latest blog post for more details & let’s connect! https://lnkd.in/en8rUyAV #incrementalitytesting #marketinganalytics #Eppo

?????? Eppo is looking for an expert partnerships person to build a world-class program. I've worked with some amazing partnerships people over the years and know the impact a great partner person can have on a company. We’re a remote-first company with a fun and collaborative culture, paired with an incredible, fast-moving product. This role offers the opportunity to work with some of the best companies in the space—Snowflake, Databricks, Google Cloud, AWS, dbt, Rudderstack, Segment, Hightouch, Datadog, and more! DM me if you want to chat or know someone that'd be great for the role.

Some of the Eppo marketing folks asked me what the most impactful advertising experiment I ever ran was -- and it was no question -- the one at Tech for Campaigns that ended up with 700,000 people signed up to vote by mail. The research question: Could Facebook ads actually increase vote-by-mail participation? The answer wasn’t just “yes"... it was a real surge in ballot requests, in voter turnout. A good experiment doesn't end there -- proof moves people, and that single experiment turned into tens of millions of dollars and a huge team of brilliant people that have supported the effort over the years.

Experimentation evangelist | marketing @ Eppo

?? Here are my THREE (3??) scalding hot takes on experiment prioritization: (you have been warned) 1?? - Prioritization is about resource management, not idea evaluation We do the idea evaluation by actually running an experiment. And regardless of how you try to guess the outcome ahead of time, expect to be wrong 40-66% of the time (depending on who you ask). Not only do we find that "surefire winners" fall flat, but more dangerously, we incorrectly discard ideas that could have meaningful impact. So don't prioritize to screen out ideas, prioritize to maximize the number of attempts we can make given finite resources. If your quarterback holds on to the ball on every play unless they think there's a possibility for a touchdown on the field, you will lose every single game to your competition. This is the biggest lever we have to exploit. Optimize for velocity and cost, not "confidence" or "impact". 2?? - Focus on prioritizing product areas We may not be great at predicting ideas, but with some historical knowledge of past experiments, we can readily identify which areas of our product (or pages on our website) seem to be very sensitive to changes. This is how Martin Tingley and the Netflix team think about it. Find the areas where users seem to be sensitive to changes (good or bad), and then test as many ideas in that area as possible. It's pretty intuitive - users may never care about what's in your homepage hero, but if you find it evokes strong reactions every time you change your product imagery, there's probably great opportunity in trying lots of different product imagery. (As a side benefit, by experimenting in places where we're likely to observe larger effect sizes, we can usually speed up our experiment runtime and increase velocity too.) 3?? - Keep the door open for randomness There always needs to be room to launch a test just because one person thinks it maybe possibly could be a neat idea. Some of the biggest experiment wins in publicly-shared history have followed this exact storyline. The famous Bing experiment that added a line of text to ad headlines and increased revenue $100M+ was kept at the bottom of the prioritization model for 6 months until an engineer just decided to try it. One of Airbnb's biggest wins of all time (opening listings in new tabs) was sandbagged by designers for months before somebody just launched it. Not only does randomness pay off, when you find unlikely winners it's less likely that your competition will think to copy the tactic anytime soon. Randomness is also a powerful spark for creativity - it's been fun to read Jakub Linowski's posts exploring how he's using randomness as fuel in his music production journey outside of work too. #experimentation #CRO #abtesting #product
