Job hunts demand control of effort and emotions. That's difficult because rejection often feels personal, even when it is not. Psychologist Christèle Albaret told Welcome to the Jungle that fear can "inhibit" job seekers. Meanwhile, too much excitement can lead to overconfidence. So, try to operate in the middle. Celebrate wins – like landing an interview – while understanding more work is needed. Also, try to cage frustration so you can present your best self. Taking breaks from the job hunt and not focusing on worst-case scenarios will help mitigate exasperation. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dtW9sGG9 Summary ?: Todd Dybas

Straight-line careers are rare. However, merging past experience into a harmonious narrative is challenging. Talent acquisition head Kristie Griffin says demonstrating a learner's mindset grabs the attention of hiring managers. Griffin writes in Fast Company to show learned skills, the timeframe you learned them, and the outcome. That shows recruiters how you adapted in the past and could in the future. Griffin also says to contextualize past success. Explain the odds against you and how you overcame them. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gXpcJqYm Summary ?: Todd Dybas

Enduring the job search – like landing a new position – takes a plan. Experts recommend creating a strategic process to make it through the hunt. ?? Set a schedule: Though you're not working, act like you are. Block out daily time to look for jobs, work on applications and enhance your network. Also, specify spots to step away from the job search. ?? Set goals: Setbacks are part of the job search. HR manager Aarti Pitroda suggests targeting a specific number of applications each week. Headhunter Katherine Valencia- Sarinas recommends breaking applications into smaller tasks. ?? Get tracking: Career coach Chaman Shagufta says a job application tracker should include "target companies, job titles, deadlines, and follow-up dates." A tracker will help you stay organized with applications and follow-ups. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eX46dRNm Summary ?: Todd Dybas

New data shows younger workers are making more inroads in tech positions. Meanwhile, older workers – those over 40 – are being pushed out. A report from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found that people under the age of 25 and those aged 25-39 make up more of the tech workforce than other industries. Amanda Hoover writes in Business Insiders that some groups view this as validation of perceived ageism. However, an expert tells Hoover that the cause of the hiring discrepancies is unclear: "We don't know the true extent of the problem, and importantly, if there is a problem we do not know how to fix it." A clenched labor market is producing an unlikely space for signing bonuses. The Wall Street Journal reports that companies are using the perk to boost offers for thoroughly qualified candidates or to keep salaries lower. So, those who get to the offer stage have leverage. Experts told the Journal that job seekers should promote their hard skills when requesting a sign-on bonus. Recruiters say the more specialized the role, the more willing a company is to deliver cash upfront. However, it's often up to the worker to ask. Companies may pay, but might not want to tout the process publicly. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ee4jDEV7 Summary ?: Todd Dybas

A recent survey showed that job seekers want honesty in the workplace — from themselves and their managers. Most respondents said employees should be able to talk about personal issues with their manager if those matters impact their work. Hiring managers agreed. The polling showed that more than half of hiring managers believe honest exchanges influence morale and retention. One thing impeding such relationships is a lack of trust. HR Dive notes that companies often think employees trust them more than they do. Better training for management could help close the gap, experts say. Researchers write in Harvard Business Review that asking open-ended questions leads to negotiation success. They used AI to cull through "more than 60,000 speech turns" from negotiation conversations. The analysis showed that the more open-ended questions asked, the more money someone secured. Researchers found that open-ended questions generated longer and more informed responses. Their advice: prep open-ended questions before a negotiation, replace yes-or-no questions with open ones and balance inquiry with relationship building.
