Do you know that feeling of excitement and optimism after you just had one of those really good work meetings or social gatherings, where despite facing many challenges, a group of inspiring and capable people comes together and creates an atmosphere that makes everyone want to pull up their sleeves and start working together for a solution, for hope, and for a better future? Yes, there still are these occasions, and I had the immense pleasure of attending one of those this week. The Common Sense Summit on Kids and Families, organized by Common Sense Media, brought together pediatricians, educators, big tech CEO’s, policy makers, journalists, investors, teenagers, students, researchers, parent activists and many more - all fighting for a brighter future for today’s kids and teens - and in doing so fighting for a better future for all of us. I learned a lot in those two days, read many statistics, listened to interesting panel discussions and engaged in inspiring conversations. But beyond all of that, the summit left me with this promising feeling of hope and excitement that I described. And that itself felt like a soul spa and made it worth attending. Here are only a few quotes I took away with me: ?? ?Activism is the rent I pay for being on this planet.“ ?? We all know what to do for the children out there; it’s exactly what we do for our own children.” ?? ?Do something, take that first step. You don’t have to do all the work. Do your work.“ ?? ?There is only one superhero and it’s you. There is no one that has the answer but us.” ?? “We used to do transactional solidarity: You sign my petition, I march in your demonstration. What we need nowadays is a holistic approach, a transformative solidarity.” May these short snippets activate you in the way they did with me. Celebrating 135 Years of the Excelsior German Center - A Legacy of Community and Culture What a fantastic evening at the gala dinner celebrating the 135th anniversary of the Excelsior German Center (EGC) in City of Oakland! Originally founded as The (German) Altenheim in 1890 to serve German-speaking seniors, the EGC has evolved into a pillar of charitable work and cultural support in the Bay Area. Today, beyond its role as a senior home, the EGC actively supports German language and culture, funding German schools, Saturday schools, teachers, and organizations like the UNITED GERMAN AMERICAN SOCIETIES OF SAN FRANCISCO AND VICINITY and its nearly 20 German clubs, including the Deutsche Musikverein. The EGC is also a key sponsor of cultural highlights such as Berlin And Beyond Film Festival (for programs please check: berlinbeyond.com) the largest German-language film festival in the U.S., returning March 27–31 to the Roxie Theater in City and County of San Francisco and the Rialto Cinemas Elmwood in City of Berkeley and also plays a major role in the beloved German Day at Golden Gate Park, which draws thousands of visitors biennially. A huge thank you to Petra Specht (President), Petra Kübler (Vice President), and Karl Pfeiffer (Treasurer), as well as the entire EGC board, members, and volunteers for organizing such a memorable celebration. A special acknowledgment goes to former President Michael Willis whose leadership ensured the EGC could grow into the incredible community it is today—helping wherever possible and truly making a difference. It was also wonderful to catch up with Sophoan Sorn (Berlin & Beyond Film Festival Director), Dr. Alexander Behrmann (new Director of the Goethe-Institut San Francisco) and Heike Feltges (President of American Association of Teachers of German - AATG NorCal). The evening was filled with exquisite food, superb German-style wine from Gundlach Bundschu Winery, and the electrifying sounds of Polka Geist—a band that made sure no one stayed seated for too long! A touching highlight was the EGC’s recognition of long-standing volunteers, honoring their service with commemorative tiles. And for me personally, an unforgettable moment: Petra Specht’s warm laudatio reflecting on my almost four years as Consul General—and the incredible gesture of presenting me with a Chief’s Lei, a deeply meaningful tradition from Hawaii, a state that is also part of my jurisdiction. What comes to mind when you hear "German industry"? How about BMWs, Haribo gummy bears, Stihl chainsaws, and HelloFresh meal kits, to name a few brands? The 200+ German subsidiaries who responded to the 2025 German American Business Outlook survey are active in over 10 industries, ranging from automotive manufacturing to financial services. Germany is known for its automobile industry, of course. And notably, BMW of North America is home to the largest BMW plant outside of Germany, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 2023, approximately 15% of all new BMW sales came from the United States! As the graphic shows, German companies are active in many industries beyond automobiles. For example, HelloFresh, the largest meal kit provider in the United States, has three corporate offices and nine distribution centers across the country — in New York, Colorado, and Illinois. German companies like these bring high-quality products to the US — and they create thousands of jobs for Americans around the country. It's a win-win cooperation! #GABO

?? Celebrating 25 Years of GISSV Excellence! ?? This past Saturday, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the German International School of Silicon Valley at a memorable GISSV Gala 2025. The German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) is part of a global network of over 140 German Schools Abroad, 1,500 DSD schools, and hundreds of FIT schools supported by the Goethe-Institut — a remarkable network of 2,000 schools worldwide. These institutions promote bilingual education, intercultural understanding, and academic excellence, preparing students to become global citizens. GISSV proudly carries this mission forward, offering both the German Abitur and a California High School Diploma, equipping students with the skills to thrive in an interconnected world. With inspiring speeches by new Head of School Dr. Wolfram Schrimpf, School Board President Shamala Hinrichsen, Supriya Solbach, teachers, former leaders and students reflected on GISSV’s remarkable journey — from its bold founding in 1999 to becoming a thriving institution with over 500 students across multiple campuses. The evening’s highlight? A spirited auction featuring unique prizes — including jam sessions with the Head of School and stunning artistic centerpieces created by students — raising over $160,000 for GISSV’s Financial Aid Fund! On Tuesday, our friends from the Swiss Consulate General opened an impressive exhibition around the iconic and well-known little girl Heidi from the Alps, transported to the present and future. Out of more than 100 submissions, the best 20 artistic pieces are now on display – all of them creative collaboration between specific AI tools and humans. Debora Giannone, creater of the winning artwork “(Up)Rooted,” was in attendance to share the process of creating her piece, followed by a dialogue about AI’s role in art, creativity, and the future of artistic expression. Happy International Women's Day ?? Today, we highlight Germany's commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda - a cornerstone of our international policy approach. Despite evidence that lasting peace is more likely when women are involved in negotiations, they far too rarely have a seat at the table. This is why Germany has set ambitious targets: by 2025, we aim to ensure that gender equality is considered in 85% of our funding initiatives. What does that mean for our Embassy? Over the course of last year, we supported the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security in organizing a workshop that brought together leaders from Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Colombia. This collaborative effort culminated in the release of "Pathways to Justice and Accountability for Conflict-Related Sexual Violence." The report is an important step in empowering leaders, the international community, and key stakeholders to better address conflict-related sexual violence.
