German American Partnership Program (GAPP)

Over 2,000 high school students and teachers from the US are expected to arrive in Germany in the coming weeks with their German American Partnership Program (GAPP) exchange. They are visiting partner schools across all 16 federal states, expanding their German language skills, getting profound insights into the German education system, and immersing themselves in the daily lives of their host families. Some GAPP- groups will continue their educational travel to Austria, Switzerland, Spain, and France. Tremendous, often year-long efforts bring us to this point: funders, staff, GAPP- board, partner organizations, teachers, school administrations, boards of education, parents, siblings, airline companies offering flight discounts, and entire communities accommodating GAPP groups—all working together. What do they have in common? A drive to make the world comprehensible in its multitude and a commitment to creating early access opportunities for youth that will form the foundation for future personal and professional lives. The German American Partnership Program (GAPP) and Goethe-Institut organized a fantastic networking reception this past weekend at the German Society of Pennsylvania alongside the ACTFL conference. I was thrilled to attend and celebrate the power of people to people exchange in transforming lives and communities and strengthening of the U.S.-Germany relationship. It was inspiring to meet incredible GAPP alumni and German language teachers, as well as partners with GAPP, the Goethe-Institut, German Embassy Washington, AATG, and others. The GAPP program supports bilateral transatlantic exchanges between schools in the U.S. and Germany, with approximately 6,000 youth participating each year across a network of 750+ U.S. schools.

A special congratulations to Bartell Berg, the new president of the American Association of Teachers of German - AATG Midwest chapter! Das German American Partnership Program (GAPP) ist das gr??te Schüleraustauschprogramm zwischen den USA und Deutschland und ein wirksamer Beitrag zur deutsch-amerikanischen Freundschaft: Mit über 400.000 Alumni, einem Netzwerk aus über 750 amerikanischen Schulen und mehr als 1800 Lehrkr?ften ist GAPP ein beeindruckendes Beispiel für nachhaltige transatlantische Verbindungen.? ?? Am Goethe-Institut New York hatte ich das Vergnügen, mit Ajkuna Hoppe, der Koordinatorin von GAPP zu sprechen. ?Allein 2023 sind 4000 Schülerinnen und Schüler aus Deutschland in die USA gereist und 3000 aus den USA nach Deutschland,“ erz?hlt Ajkuna Hoppe stolz. Die zweiw?chigen Reisen, bei denen die Jugendlichen eine Woche an einer Partnerschule verbringen, schaffen Begegnungen und Freundschaften, die oft ein Leben lang halten.? ?? GAPP wird vom Goethe-Institut New York und dem P?dagogischen Austauschdienst organisiert und erh?lt Unterstützung durch das Ausw?rtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, das U.S. Department of State, die Max-Kade-Stiftung und die Joachim Herz Stiftung. Der gro?e Erfolg des Programms liegt aber auch am Engagement der Teilnehmenden selbst – für jeden Euro Zuschuss bringt das Netzwerk stolze 16 Euro privater Beitr?ge auf.? ?? Mit gro?em Respekt h?re ich von Ajkunas Geschichten über ehemalige Teilnehmende: wie Marcel Dabo, der 2015 nach Indiana kam und heute für die Indianapolis Colts Football spielt, oder Freundschaften wie die von Achim Schommer und Leo Chu, die sich 1988 kennenlernten und bis heute Kontakt halten. ?Selbst ?GAPP-Babies“ gibt es inzwischen“, erz?hlt Ajkuna Hoppe lachend.? ?? Besonders danke ich den Lehrkr?ften, die mit Leidenschaft diesen Austausch m?glich machen und ihren Schülerinnen und Schülern so wertvolle Einblicke in eine andere Kultur erm?glichen.
