Last week, Gerber employees took advantage of volunteer time off to help with packing boxes at Sunshine Division, an organization who provides food and clothing relief to local Portland families and individuals in need. Sunshine Division helps over 15,600 families each year and makes bulk donates to 15 other food relief agencies in 5 countries. The team at Gerber had a ton of fun volunteering with the Sunshine Division, packing 440 food boxes.

Throughout our #Gerber85 year history, we've received some legendary letters. One of our most prized possessions around the office is this letter we received from the White House in 1955. While on a trip to Denver, Colorado, President Eisenhower suffered from a massive heart attack and was hospitalized; it was a major news event that took over the papers. And while the president recovered, many people sent in best wishes and gifts, including Joe Gerber. Gerber gifted President Eisenhower a set of legendary kitchen knives to wish the president well in his recovery. A month later, this letter arrived in Portland. ? Today on the blog - we continue to celebrate our 85th anniversary and highlight Portland's rich history in the knife industry. Gerber wasn’t the first to the knife party, but we’ve sure made a big impact on the industry in town. Henry Brands was the first to start making knives in 1919 and began supplying knives for local salmon fishermen. 20 years later, Joe Gerber, an ad agency man, decided to pivot to the knife market, selling culinary knives, eventually becoming one of the top brands for outdoor and military knives. As one of the early companies to open our doors, we’re proud to call Portland our home and continue the legacy of?American-made craftsmanship. https://lnkd.in/gXMw7Pv6
