ATTENTION K-12 EARTH SCIENCE TEACHERS OF TULSA!!!! GFT's Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Natural Resources in the Earth Sciences Applications are NOW OPEN! https://lnkd.in/gMTtwnk4 Each year, The Tulsa Geological Society Foundation makes a $2,250 cash award to an individual teacher for Excellence in the Teaching of Natural Resources in the Earth Sciences. The Foundation expects that one-third of the award is applied to the teacher’s school program under their sole direction and two-thirds is for personal use by the teacher. Requirements: 1. Minimum of three years full-time teaching experience at any K – 12 level. 2. Teaching at least one unit per year on natural resources. Natural resources are defined as Earth materials used by civilizations past and present. These may include: a. Organic materials such as petroleum, natural gas, coal and oil shale. b. Inorganic substances found in the Earth such as mineral ores, building stone and aggregate. c. Energy resources from the Earth such as geothermal energy. 3. Teaching should include the scientific study of these resources, their origin, discovery, extraction and historic and present use. It should also include the preservation of the environment, reclamation, the conservation of resources, and the use of earth science knowledge in decision making. 4. Entries will include the teacher’s philosophy and methods of the teaching of natural resources (both content and pedagogy), a description of the unit and two letters of recommendation – one from a colleague and one from an administrator. 5. Unit will be evaluated on depth and breadth of concepts (resource origin, discovery, processing, usage and reclamation), creativity of presentation and balanced treatment of information regarding societal need and environmental issues. We are excited to report there were a total of eight sponsors and 11 teams comprised of 47 total registrants. Here are some of the highlights of GFT’s last 6 months: GFT sent five local high school students to both attend and present at GSA in Stillwater.?These students are now going onto State and National competitions as well as attending field courses due to the connections and grants awarded at that GSA conference.?These students will now compete in Washington DC and on to Stockholm, Sweden!! Our Teacher of the Year, Shannon Chatwin, of Owasso was named the National Educator of the Year and now has received an OERB Teacher of the Year award ($10,000) as well as a prestigious National Educator Award which she will accept in Washington DC in August. We had six scholarships granted last year ($1500/each) to students in the Geosciences from OU, OSU, and University of Arkansas.?These students are now in internships all over the country primarily in oil and gas.
