Thank you Jimmie Smith, Jr, MD, MPH for being an awesome host! Your commitment to your students and your community is inspiring! Shout out to Tabia Henry Akintobi, PhD, MPH, Katrina M. Brantley, DrPH, MPH , Rosanna Barrett and the entire CEAL Restores team for making this happen! We look forward to the next one!
Civic Advocacy and Policy Training Thank you Georgia Watch, and Morehiuse School of Medicine, for facilitating this training today at the Macon-Bibb County Health Department. The diverse group of community members present learned a great deal about data, social determinants of health, the legislative process, and even finished the day with an interactive “policy pitch” to their colleagues. Additionally, the class members spent time with Mercer University undergraduate students who are majoring in public health. The students shared their research with them through a “Data Walk”.

We were glad to have you there Saundra Latimer, MPH !
Attended an incredibly engaging workshop on civic advocacy this past Saturday, facilitated by Georgia Watch (Natasha Taylor) for the Georgia CEAL RESTORES program. We covered so much, from understanding how a bill becomes law to clarifying the difference between advocacy and lobbying. One of the highlights was practicing our elevator pitches for policy changes to local public officials. The most surprising thing I learned was that Georgia state legislators are only in session for a total of 40 days each year! Timing is key! Huge thanks to Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Watch, and DeKalb Public Health for this valuable experience and for empowering us with the tools to make a difference.

Yesterday, Georgia Watch Deputy Director Natasha Taylor attended the State of Metro Atlanta Summit hosted by ARCHI . Natasha was invited to host a breakout session on leveraging community voices to influence policy changes promoting health equity. Expert panelists Laura Colbert, Georgians for a Healthy Future, Pedro J. Viloria, Latino Community Fund (LCF Georgia), Cindy Zeldin, Georgia Health Initiative and Edward Lai, MPH, Metro Atlanta Chamber, shared invaluable insights on successful advocacy campaigns, strategies for engaging policymakers and building coalitions to drive impactful change. The conversations were powerful, highlighting the transformative power of collaboration and community-driven solutions. Thank you to ARCHI for hosting an amazing summit! Together, we’re shaping a future where policy reflects the voices and needs of the people it serves. Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to this meaningful dialogue! Let’s keep the momentum going! #GeorgiaWatch #Advocacy #HealthEquity #CommunityVoices

Health insurers are using artificial intelligence to approve or deny payment for certain medical procedures and treatments. But so far, in most states, these actions are highly unregulated. This weekend and next week, my fellow Consumer Reps to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) will be presenting the following report to state regulators and urging them to act soon to protect consumers.
