As #COP29 is drawing to a close, much of the conversation is focused on the idea that we can address climate change most effectively if we transform our cities, with a focus on renewable energy and sustainable management of water, food, and materials, while switching to a green economy and taking care of all our fellow citizens and our biodiversity. At Georgia Tech School of City & Regional Planning we are very focused on this goal and seek to educate global leaders in sustainable, resilient and just places through our City and Regional Planning, Urban Analytics, Global Development and Geographic Information Science & Technology programs. Wondering how you can get equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to make urban life sustainable? Our online info sessions are a great way to learn more about the professional fields of urban planning, urban analytics, GIS and global development and our graduate programs. You can also get valuable information and answers to your practical questions with regards to the application process, funding opportunities, and more. Yesterday SCaRP students, alums, and faculty came toghether with Georgia Tech College of Design Dean Ellen Bassett to celebrate the 25th World GIS Day. A special shoutout to alumna Ansley McKenzie (MCRP & MS-GIST '23) for her insightful and informative talk. Her tips and resources were much appreciated by the audience. A big thank you also to current student Meng-Hsuan (Vivian) Lin, MS-GIST representative to the Georgia Institute of Technology Student Planning Association, for keeping the energy high with a fun GIS-themed trivia game. We realized we need even more time for fun with maps and spatial analytics presentations, so stay tuned for a bigger event next year in a bigger space where we can display even more cool maps and student projects and welcome more alums to join us in person! In the meantime, if you are wondering how you can learn GIS with us, see https://lnkd.in/ewaAamAS #GIS #GISDay #Geoinformatics #mapping #RemoteSensing #Cartography

Prof. Jairo H. Garcia, Dr. was invited to attend the Ministerial Meeting on Urbanization and Climate Change at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 Azerbaijan, the topic of the meeting being "Creating a Better Urban Future". He's been attending many meetings and sharing snippets here on LinkedIn that are making us very excited to welcome him back to Georgia Institute of Technology to hear his first-hand reports from the conference. We wanted to share this crucial snipped of information that highlights the fact that how we design, manage and re-design cities is key to reducing GHG emissions. We are proud of our faculty and alumni who do amazing work towards this goal to create sustainable, resilient, and just places. Stay tuned for an interview upon his return. #COP29 #urbanplanning #climateresiliency #climateaction #globaldevelopment #megacities

Congratulations to Dylan Apelu and Vincent Parisi, both students in the Master of City and Regional Planning program, on receiving Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowships from the U.S. Department of Transportation! "This fellowship is part of a national effort to support bright, dedicated individuals who will lead the future of transportation in areas like infrastructure, planning, safety, and sustainability. It is truly an incredible opportunity,” said Gulsah Akar, chair of the School of City and Regional Planning. Read about their research at: https://lnkd.in/ee4WDTVP #PlanningAtTech #GeorgiaTech

The Generation 2 Reinvented Toilet #G2RT was the highlight of Georgia Institute of Technology's booth at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt. So many WUF attendees see potential for a toilet that requires no municipal infrastructure connections. The #G2RT was developed by a 9-organization team led by Prof. Shannon Yee of the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With Yee in Cairo were Lisa Bianchi-Fossati and Mirella Kades of the Woodruff School; Dean Ellen Bassett, Darby Fly, and Bruce Stiftel, FAICP of the Georgia Tech College of Design, Lotte Kristoferitsch of EOOS GmbH Social Design, and Erin McCusker of LIXIL. What a great World Town Planning Day today at the Georgia Institute of Technology! The GT Student Planning Association and the School of City and Regional Planning hosted Eric Kronberg from Kronberg Urbanists + Architects whose talk was focused on this year's WTPD theme "Homes Start with Planning". Eric discussed the current housing crisis and the reasons why affordable housing is scarce while at the same cities and especially suburban areas are struggling financially. He highlighted the mismatch between existing housing stock and zoning regulations and the needs of modern households and discussed solutions such as right-sizing housing and updating zoning regulations to encourage infill development. If you are interested in the insightful data Eric shared during the talk, the slide deck can be found at https://lnkd.in/eShUYEgy - look for "Housing Choice & Economic Development" WPD GA TECH The talk concluded with an engaging Q+A session that ran overtime and lots of applause. Thank you, Eric Kronberg! #affordablehousing #wtpd #urbanplanning #zoning #economicdevelopment #sustainabledevelopment #urbandesign #urbanism

Congratulations to PhD student Shinah Park and Dr. Gulsah Akar for their new article analyzing the socioeconomic and built environment factors that influence how older adults choose to travel in Georgia, published in the Journal of Transport Geography. Free full access through ScienceDirect. #urbantransportation #urbanplanning #aging #aginginplace
? I'm excited to share that my paper, 'Analysis of Socioeconomic and Built Environment Factors Influencing Travel Mode Choice of Older Adults in Georgia,' co-authored with Dr. Gulsah Akar, has been recently published in the Journal of Transport Geography! I'd like to thank my advisor, Dr. Akar, and the Georgia Tech School of City & Regional Planning for their invaluable support in my PhD journey. The paper explores the travel behavior of older adults and how factors associated with their sustainable mode choices shift with age, offering additional insights through comparisons with younger adults. For those pursuing active aging and facing challenges that come with driving cessation, creating environments that support non-auto modes, such as public transit, and non-motorized modes (i.e., walking and biking), is crucial. Our analysis shows that as individuals age, having medical conditions reduces the likelihood of choosing non-auto modes, while trips for errands and social activities increase the likelihood of opting for non-motorized options. Additionally, residential density has a greater influence on non-auto mode choices for older adults. We found that older adults tend to live and travel in low-density, less walkable areas with limited non-auto mode options. We suggest that these factors should be considered in supporting the travel needs of older adults. ??The full paper can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/e6cr8DDM
