This week’s meeting of the Georgia Research Alliance Academy of Scientists brought something for everyone. Four new GRA Eminent Scholars each gave a macro view of their research, using just a single slide. Two researchers reported on their courageous entrepreneurial journeys. Guest speaker Dr. Joe Mendelson, director of research at (our host site) Zoo Atlanta, expounded on threats to species around the world. ? On top of all that — quite literally — an owl flew around the room! ? I love everything about this yearly event, especially when brilliant university scientists in our great state swap notes, ideas and experiences. Their research reminds me of the tremendous impact they have on Georgia — and gives me optimism about our capacity to solve problems in the future.

The Georgia Research Alliance helps Georgia’s universities conduct more research and create more companies to grow the state’s economy. GRA recruits star research talent to Georgia’s universities; provides sophisticated tools and core facilities to help researchers win more competitive grants; and seeds and shapes startup companies around university inventions. The Alliance’s cumulative 32-year ROI is over $13 billion, a 19-to-1 return on Georgia’s investment. GRA’s eight partner universities are: Augusta University, Clark Atlanta University, Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, Mercer University, Morehouse School of Medicine and The University of Georgia.

Good news out of BioCircuit Technologies: NIH is awarding the GRA-backed startup up to $3 million to extend its product that heals peripheral nerves. Called Nerve Tape, it wraps around damaged nerves with hooks holding it in place – an inventive alternative to sutures threaded under a microscope. More than 1,000 Nerve Tape? devices have been surgically used now, and the grant will help the company gather more evidence to build on the momentum. A great success story out of Georgia Tech! https://bit.ly/3V38sAX

Tomorrow brings one of our favorite events of the year – the annual convening of the GRA Academy of Scientists. It’s really inspiring to see great explorers of different disciplines exchanging ideas and sharing experiences. (Sometimes, they’ll even cook up a collaboration project.) Georgia is fortunate to be home base to these university scientists who move our world forward in so many ways – and WE are fortunate to know and work with them!

Cell Press, the publisher of 50+ scientific journals, has picked its “50 Scientists That Inspire” – and one of them is GRA Distinguished Investigator Melissa Boneta Davis of Morehouse School of Medicine. A quick and good Q&A with Melissa is featured: https://bit.ly/3YKuJEw BTW, Cell Press begins its ‘About’ statement thusly: “We believe that, to meet our greatest challenges, the world needs science that inspires.” We agree!

Good to see this Kennesaw State University piece on KSU startup company GlucoCheck – it’s got a ring-link device that gauges glucose levels without need for needle pricks. The project is getting investment and guidance from GRA’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship program. Way to go, GlucoCheck!
Kennesaw State is a student-centered, research-driven institution with an emphasis on research with relevance.
Changing the game in diabetes care! ?? Kennesaw State’s Dr. Maria Valero has received a Georgia Research Alliance grant to advance GlucoCheck, a groundbreaking, noninvasive glucose monitoring device. This ring-like sensor uses light absorption and AI to provide accurate, blood-free readings. With up to 90% accuracy, GlucoCheck could revolutionize daily life for millions of diabetics. ???? ?? Our GRA team was warmly welcomed in Columbus, Ga., yesterday by GRA Trustee Jim Hillenbrand, president and CEO of the W.C. Bradley Company, as well as Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson, III, and other community leaders. We learned about the growth trajectory of the city and region and heard enlightening presentations from GRA member Mercer University. Our travels around Georgia always bring new ideas for how growing university research and entrepreneurship can positively impact communities and people.?

A new study at Emory University has uncovered a troubling resilience in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a dangerous pathogen that can cause severe infections, especially in vulnerable populations. Found in many environments, including hospitals, the pathogen is showing resistance to commonly used disinfectants. The lab of GRA Distinguished Investigator Bill Wuest tested the disinfectants on 20 drug-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa. Alarmingly, all strains at least partially resisted, with 80% fully resisting the disinfectants. https://bit.ly/3O1uq3i
