The future Dr. Finley Thompson (vet med and NASA scientist, she says) had to come with me to work at the GMNH the other day. My daughter is lucky as she experiences museums and science every day. For other kids we need to ensure they are exposed to science, the arts, and all the rich experiences that museums and universities have to offer.

  • Last Friday, we joined MFA student Larissa McPherson for the opening reception of her exhibition Speculative Adornment. Her works explore issues of microplastics and waste in the environment, particularly in the bodies of animals. We have had an amazing time working with Larissa on her research for this show! Speculative Adornment will be open to the public at the Lamar Dodd Bridge Gallery until March 21st!

  • We are excited to highlight that our Executive Director, Victor Thompson, with colleagues from the University of Oregon, University of Hawai'i, Southern Owl Clan of the Chumash Nation, and Coquille Indian Tribe, have published this incredible letter in Science Magazine addressing the threats that climate change poses to maritime heritage. Give it a read!

Congratulations to Mary Freeman, who received the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southeastern Fishes Council! Freeman's expertise includes many different facets important to the conservation of freshwater biota, including basic biodiversity science, effects of river and water resource management on stream communities, instream flow influences on aquatic biota dynamics, and consequences of community change on stream ecosystem function. Her work fills a critical knowledge gap between theory and practice, notes Anna George, SFC chair-elect. One nominator wrote "She truly cares about the people she works with, and she consistently exhibits grace and humility in every situation she encounters. Without question, it is these qualities that amplify her ability to also bring out the absolute best in every person she works with." Ecology students and RBC affiliates are lucky to be among the dozens that she advised, co-advised or worked with. Thanks, Dr. Freeman, for sharing your expertise, your mentorship and your time. And congratulations on the well-deserved recognition!

  • On Thursday, January 23rd, Dr. Mary Freeman was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southeastern Fishes Council. Her immense contributions to the research and understanding of freshwater fish populations in the Southeast spans four decades, and her work on the conservation of freshwater fauna has helped to conserve the region's natural biodiversity of generations to come. ?? Congratulations on this incredible recognition, Dr. Freeman! For more reasons than we can count, the Georgia Museum of Natural History would not be what it is without you. You can currently see a regional darter species described by Dr. Freeman, the Halloween darter, on exhibit in the GMNH gallery. You can also read more about Dr. Freeman and this incredible achievement here: https://lnkd.in/er5zgs9U.
