As we give thanks and celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, let’s remember the gift of sight.?It is easy to overlook clear vision?and our access to vision care services. Unfortunately, too many Georgians suffer from undiagnosed vision issues or vision loss that may be treatable. Our Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation family of supporters spans the entire state of Georgia.?We are grateful for our donors, patients, doctors, strategic partners, and everyone who makes our mission possible. The need remains great.?While we continue to address the challenges of the 1.4 million uninsured Georgians with one third of the state lacking vision services, we are sharpening our focus to address the gaps in vision services for Georgia’s students.?Vision disorders in children affect 1 in 4 school-aged children significantly impacting their ability to learn.?That is WHY we need YOU?to help us bring the gift of sight to all underserved Georgians, especially our children. We are blessed to have an anonymous donor through a donor-advised fund of Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta who will match up to $50,000 raised in our year-end fundraising appeal. 2024 is the year of our 75th Anniversary. A year of coming together, celebrating and remembering those who's vision and hard work served in the past to bring clear vision to Georgians who needed it most. The momentum to address the vision needs in Georgia has never been greater thanks to the engagement of Georgia Lions Clubs, partners, volunteers, donors, schools and community health centers and our amazing staff. Looking back on our history helped helps us understand what challenges were faced, what we might face in the future and how to address them. The #PeachBowl was the first charity bowl and is credited to being created by Lions Club member George Pierre Crumbley Jr., known as the “Father of the Peach Bowl”, who shepherded it through NCAA certification. The game was originally created as a fund-raiser by the Lions Clubs of Georgia in 1968, to raise money for the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, of which he was an officer. He served as the game’s executive director from 1968 to 1985. ? Kevin Butler is a former NFL placekicker celebrated for his impressive career with the Chicago Bears. He played college football at the University of Georgia from 1981 to 1984, earning All SEC Honor three times, where his iconic 60-yard field goal against Clemson helped solidify his legacy. Drafted by the Bears in 1985, Butler was the leading scorer in their Super Bowl XX victory and earned multiple Pro Bowl selections. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001, recognizing his outstanding collegiate contributions. Outside of football, Butler has been dedicated to community service, particularly in youth sports, and he has received numerous awards for his philanthropic efforts.
