The U.S. health system depends upon a financially stable Medicaid program. Cuts to Medicaid would have far-reaching repercussions for children, families, seniors, people with disabilities. They would also impact access to care for many people in small towns and rural communities as rural health systems struggle to survive.

Rural America is often left out of important conversations regarding health. As a new administration is coming and threats of Medicaid cuts arise, it is critical to learn about the role that Medicaid plays in rural communities. I was born in a rural town in Delaware and see the health disparities that lie. Medicaid is helping to cover the elderly, young children, and pregnant women. Health care systems and the health of families at large in small towns and rural areas would have a detrimental impact from Medicaid cuts. If you know me, you know that all I talk about is Medicaid. Unfortunately, I predict that it'll soon be all that anyone is talking about. The incoming Presidential administration has promised massive federal budget cuts, but has also promised not to touch Medicare and Social Security. So, what's left? Medicaid. $2.3 trillion (with a "T") worth of cuts are being considered from Medicaid alone. Though this magnitude is unlikely, it is a frightening prospect. Georgetown University Center for Children and Families is releasing a report today titled "Medicaid's Role in Small Towns and Rural Areas" that highlights the importance of Medicaid for a variety of eligibility groups in rural communities across the country.
