The 2024 Lombardi Women: Connecting for a Cure event brought together breast cancer survivors, researchers, and supporters to raise $290K+ for the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown Lombardi. This year’s event featured heartfelt survivor stories and updates on groundbreaking research from experts like Dr. Claudine Isaacs and Dr. Lucy Maria de la Cruz. We recently celebrated a decade of progress in treating melanoma and kidney cancer at the Thrivership Luncheon. Held at the Annapolis Yacht Club, survivors gathered to share stories of resilience and success, thanks to groundbreaking immunotherapy treatments that have revolutionized care. Dr. Michael Atkins, who led many of these clinical trials, reminded attendees: “The journey of going through treatment for cancer is a relatively lonely journey. You do it with yourself and your family, maybe some close friends, but now you’re in a room with a lot of people who’ve been through essentially the same journey and you realize you’re not alone.” With over 100,000 melanoma diagnoses and 80,000 kidney cancer diagnoses in the U.S. each year, these advancements are saving lives and providing hope. https://lnkd.in/gge4RYHm

We were so honored to host W. Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, director of National Cancer Institute (NCI), who graciously listened as we shared details about our work at Lombardi. Later, she treated us to a fascinating lecture titled "Further, Faster: Working Together to End Cancer As We Know It.”

We are proud to announce that Dr. Jeffrey Toretsky has been named the inaugural holder of the Hyundai Hope On Wheels Endowed Chair in Pediatric Oncology. This tremendous honor reflects Hyundai’s long-standing commitment to pediatric cancer research, with over $7 million pledged to Georgetown since 2004. Dr. Toretsky’s groundbreaking work focuses on developing targeted therapies for children with Ewing sarcoma, aiming to reduce toxicity while enhancing treatment effectiveness. This summer, we hosted our largest class yet for the Diversity in Cancer Research Undergraduate Internship Program. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Georgetown University, the 10-week program immerses undergraduates in cancer research, providing mentorship, life-changing career guidance, and hands-on experience in various scientific disciplines. A newly compiled list of foods and drinks commonly consumed in the United States and a new study sheds light on the often-overlooked sources of saturated fat and added sugar in our diets. This innovative trial, available at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center through Georgetown Lombardi, has enrolled over 2,500 patients and tested 25 new therapies! With its adaptive design, patients get personalized treatment, and doctors can quickly assess effectiveness, leading to better outcomes.
