  • This past week, Georgetown celebrated two major additions to the neighborhood: Osteria Mozza and Barnes & Noble, joining a wave of exciting new openings! ?? Osteria Mozza, the first East Coast location of this LA favorite by James Beard Award-winners Stephen Starr and Nancy Silverton, is now open at 3276 M St NW. Located in the iconic former Dean & DeLuca space, this Italian restaurant offers a marble-topped mozzarella bar, a beautiful solarium for outdoor dining, a private dining room with views of the main space, and a market stocked with Italian specialties—from fresh produce to artisanal olive oils. The menu is an Italian lover's dream, featuring highlights like a deconstructed Caesar salad, tagliatelle with oxtail ragu, and Silverton’s cheese-filled focaccia di recco. ??? Meanwhile, Barnes & Noble has made a highly anticipated return to its former Georgetown home at 3040 M St NW after 13 years. The three-story bookstore spans 30,000 square feet and offers books, magazines, stationery, toys, gifts, movies, music, and a café. CEO James Daunt described it as "the most ambitious of all the new bookstores we, or anyone else, has opened in over 15 years," marking a major milestone in the revival of brick-and-mortar bookstores. Stop by for some good old-fashioned browsing and check out the weekly in-store author book talks and events! ?? • We were excited to be a part of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development's convening yesterday, that brought multiple organizations together on the state of Downtown DC's transformation. Our Economic Development Director Faith Broderick did an outstanding job sharing about Georgetown's economic recovery and strong position as the city's premier shopping and dining destination.

Yesterday, Mayor Bowser and DMPED hosted an event on the future of DC’s sustained economy, centering on strategic priorities for attracting high-growth industries, revitalizing Downtown DC’s commercial sector, and addressing the evolution of the federal city. Our thanks to Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy for hosting us in their beautiful new building, and to the Washington DC Economic Partnership, Federal City Council, and Gensler for making the event a reality. Our thanks to the presenters, panelists, and thought leaders who dedicated their time, energy, and expertise. And our thanks to all the attendees for taking time out of your days to come together for what we hope was a thoughtful and impactful discussion. ? The exciting opportunities for a vibrant economic future are within reach. But we have to work together to get there. As Mayor Bowser said: we are the best city in the world. We are a resilient city. Our finances are strong and our economic fundamentals are strong. But we need you to keep the ideas coming and to think big, because DC is ready to be your partner. • Thank you to everyone who joined us last week to celebrate the BID’s 25th Anniversary at our Annual Meeting! ?? ?? It was inspiring to recognize and honor those who were part of the BID’s founding in 1999 as well as our Community Partner Award recipients this year. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser presented a special Mayoral proclamation to the BID for its 25th Anniversary, and DC Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto reflected on Georgetown’s achievements over the past several years. Georgetown BID CEO Joe Sternlieb, who recently announced he is stepping down in early 2025 and received his own Mayoral proclamation for his tenure, said in his opening remarks: “I am incredibly optimistic about the future of DC and the future of Georgetown - which is experiencing a counter-cyclical renaissance and can contribute to the recovery of the rest of the city so long as we don’t stop investing here as well. It’s my hope that we will bring the same drive, creativity, and commitment to collaborative planning to help the District move forward as we did 30 years ago when we created BIDs and 25 years ago when many of the people in this room tonight founded the Georgetown BID.” Congratulations to this year’s Community Partner Awardees! ? Richard Levy, CEO of The Levy Group -- 25th Anniversary Community Partner Award ? Officer Natalie Charles of the DC Metropolitan Police Department, 2nd District Unhoused Outreach -- Community Partner Award ? Paul Caswell of the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection, Ward 2 Account Manager -- Community Partner Award ? Eugene Abbott -- Clean Team Member of the Year Award

After a transformative 12-year tenure, our CEO Joe Sternlieb has announced his decision to step down in 2025. From leading the Georgetown 2028 strategic plan to driving our pandemic response, Joe's leadership and innovation has left an indelible mark. As he transitions to his new role at the Federal City Council, we are excited to see where his passion for social and economic development will lead. Meanwhile, our search for a new visionary for the role of CEO has begun. Onward to the next chapter of Georgetown BID's journey! Thank you for everything, Joe!??

  • In 2013, the Georgetown BID brought together a diverse group of Georgetown merchants, property owners, ANC members, restaurateurs, office tenants, architects, BID Board members, community leaders, and engaged citizens. The goal? To collaborate on enhancing the Georgetown experience for visitors, residents, business owners, and employees. After over 100 hours of meetings and input from 200+ members of our community, we developed a consensus plan with 76 recommendations to tackle key issues—ranging from transportation challenges to public space improvements, reducing office vacancies, and attracting unique shops and restaurants. This effort gave rise to the Georgetown 2028 15-Year Action Plan. By 2021, we completed or made significant progress on 67 of the 76 action items. Since then, we have adapted to changing priorities in a post-pandemic world, continuing to refine efforts to support our neighborhood’s evolving needs.
