"During the Cold War, there was a similar dynamic; we subordinated Africa to our competition with the Soviet Union. And today we will make a similar mistake if we treat Africa simply as a place to compete against China. That’s not going to be good enough. We need a more robust engagement, to see Africa as critical to the United States’ global position. We need a relationship that is built on the mutual benefit of Africa and United States," says Jendayi Frazer, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Duignan Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, adjunct Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, President and Chief Executive Officer of 50 Ventures Read "Helping Africa boom" from the latest issue of The Catalyst: https://lnkd.in/gj_fC9b2 #CatalystIdeas

"One of the things that we in the United States have to appreciate is that it’s very much in our interest as a country to have safe, secure, stable, and prosperous neighbors. Between the year 2000 and about 2010, Latin America made great progress in terms of advancing democracies and seeing relatively modest but very consistent economic growth. People moved away from extreme poverty and developed a sense that they could make a living. And it wasn’t just the economics that were improving – security was as well." — Amb. Antonio Garza, former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, member the Bush Center Board of Directors, and Chair of the Bush Institute’s Advisory Council Read "A win-win approach to Latin America" from the latest issue of The Catalyst: https://lnkd.in/gm_W_f8N #CatalystIdeas

"The United States needs more legal pathways for people who want to come here to work and contribute. And that’s true whether we’re talking about people who have a master’s degree in a STEM field or whether we’re talking about someone with a skilled labor certification but no bachelor’s degree. We have a lot of jobs open at all skill levels, they’re all important, and we need to make sure that the people who want to come here and work have the ability to do so," says Bush Institute's Laura Collins on #immigration. "If Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are successful in undermining the global order, the resulting disorder may give them so much confidence that no matter what the United States then does, they will not be deterred," says Victor Cha in response to a question posed by Bush Institute's Jonathan Tepperman about whether the West can deter authoritarian countries if it has been weakened by events such as America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. “The United States faces enormous challenges in the months and years ahead, and virtually all recent media coverage of current affairs stops there. But the United States also possesses enormous advantages. If Washington can figure out how to apply the latter to the former, the country’s future looks far brighter than the doomsayers would have you believe,” says Jonathan Tepperman, Editor-in-Chief of The Catalyst and Senior Fellow at the Bush Institute. This unique issue of The Catalyst features articles that touch on topics from the Bush Institute’s 2025 Policy Recommendations. The Catalyst is available for you to explore anytime, anywhere.
