Take a look at this disk of wood chips, now highly fire-resistant thanks to impregnation with geopolymers! This technology is driving our development of sprays and coatings to protect wood surfaces, enhancing both the strength and insulation of the material. Now, geopolymers don’t petrify wood in the traditional sense, but they can encase and preserve it by forming a mineral-like layer. While petrification replaces organic material with minerals over time, geopolymers fill wood pores and coat the surface, creating a stone-like finish that reinforces durability. Some research explores mimicking natural petrification, though it doesn’t fully replicate fossilization.

In a world grappling with climate change and resource depletion, innovative solutions are more crucial than ever. A recent perspective article, “Why geopolymers and alkali-activated materials are key components of a sustainable world,” highlights the transformative potential of these materials in promoting sustainability within the construction industry. These eco-friendly alternatives to traditional cement can significantly reduce carbon emissions and utilize local waste materials. To maximize their impact, a comprehensive strategy is needed, focusing on: ?? Investment in research & innovation ?? Collaboration between academia & industry ?? Economic incentives ?? Education & awareness ?? Strengthening global supply chains By embracing these innovative materials, we can foster a greener, more resilient construction industry and contribute to a sustainable future. #Sustainability #Geopolymers #ConstructionInnovation #ClimateAction

Reports from the 16th annual Geopolymer Camp 2024 at the Geopolymer Institute, France, July 8-10, 2024 Addressing a packed lecture hall in his State of the Field keynote, Dr. Joseph Davidovits, the founder of the Geopolymer Institute, charted the rise of geopolymer research centers and publications to date. He noted the current understanding that poly(sialate)-alkaline-based geopolymers undergo a transformation from primary to quaternary structures that result in an x-ray amorphous 10-20 nanometer geopolymeric micelle the size of organic polymers. This nano-sized quaternary structure explains geopolymers’ excellent thermal shock resistance at extreme temperatures and resistance to very high vacuum, making it the ideal material for lunar, space, and extraterrestrial applications. One polysialate geopolymer, Tempoz C90F, was found to have exceptionally high 25-30mPA flexural strength (4000psi) and 180MPa compressive strength (26,000 MPa) on account of meta-halloysite formation. As a counterpoint to poly(sialate)-alkaline geopolymers, the Institute also recently elaborated the principles of phosphoric and organic acid-based alumoxy-based geopolymerization, which explains the likely origins of ancient vases and the Tiwanaku/Puma Punku monuments, both of which would have been too hard to carve from natural stone. Our CEO Tarek Maassarani presented on Geopolymer International’s GLDS system and other developments, alongside a wide variety of distinguished researchers and entrepreneurs covering 3D geopolymer printing, natural cement as a substitute for slag, geopolymer marble substitute, and geopolymers made from demolition waste.
