The Early Cretaceous opening of the South Atlantic Ocean was accompanied by extensive intrusive and extrusive magmatism collectively grouped in the South Atlantic Igneous Province (SAIP). The SAIP includes the onshore Paraná-Etendeka large igneous province (PELIP), offshore seaward-dipping reflectors sequences, the Rio Grande Rise and Walvis Ridge, and voluminous intrusive magmatism. Nonetheless, the nature of the processes that lead to continental breakup remain controversial, and the environmental impact of these events is not yet fully understood. In order to investigate the tectonomagmatic evolution of the South Atlantic, a team of researchers recently presented a new compilation of the various geochemical compositions and radiometric ages associated with the SAIP as well as an estimation of magma volumes constrained by extensive seismic, gravity, and magnetic datasets. This week at the 2025 Geological Society of America?Joint Northeastern and North-Central Section Meeting, I had a great experience presenting my team's research on compound bar stratigraphy throughout the Great Miami River and attending many fascinating lectures. I sincerely appreciate everyone who stopped by my poster presentation; your insightful questions and ideas on future directions and applications for our work were truly valuable.

Therizinosaurs were a group of herbivorous/omnivorous theropod dinosaurs that lived in Asia and North America during the Cretaceous Period. These theropods are notable for their three-fingered hands sporting large claw-like unguals. A team of researchers recently revealed a new and unusual species of therizinosaurid, Duonychus tsogtbaatari, recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Bayanshiree Formation of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. GSA’s 2025 Joint Northeastern and North-Central Section Meeting is off to a great start! Several attendees were lucky enough to explore some of the exceptional geologic features surrounding Erie, PA on GSA Field Trips yesterday, even turning up some fossils! Just a friendly reminder, to stay up to date on all of the amazing geoscience happening at this year’s meeting, take a look at our Meeting Program: geosociety.co/NENCP #GSASectionMeetings #NENCGSA2025 #Geoscience #Geology #EarthScience

An M7.7 earthquake struck overnight near Mandalay, Myanmar, as the result of strike slip faulting between the India and Eurasia plates. Focal mechanism solutions indicate that slip occurred on either a north-striking, steeply-dipping, right-lateral fault, or a west striking, steeply-dipping, left-lateral fault. The finite fault solution indicates a north striking right-lateral fault. This focal mechanism and finite fault solution are consistent with the earthquake potentially occurring on the right-lateral Sagaing Fault that lies in the fault zone that defines the plate boundary between the Indian and Sunda plates. While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. The finite fault solution indicates the size of this event is about 200 km by 20 km (length x width). This region has experienced similar large strike slip earthquakes, with six other magnitude 7 and larger earthquakes occurring within about 150 miles (250 km) of this earthquake since 1900. The most recent of these was a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in January 1990, which caused 32 buildings to fall. A magnitude 7.9 earthquake occurred south of today’s earthquake in February 1912. Within this broad zone of tectonic deformation, other large earthquakes include a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in 1988. #Earthquake #Mandalay #Geoscience #Seismology

The Geological Society of America invites all undergraduate geoscience students to apply for GSA’s Section Research Grants! These grants support students conducting original research by providing funding to fuel their curiosity and advance their studies. In 2024, we proudly awarded grants to 12 exceptional students and we look forward to awarding even more this year! This is your chance to bring your research to life and join a growing community of future geoscience leaders! “It was such an incredible opportunity to experience science "in the field" rather than in a classroom. I got to see that there is so much that goes into field work both before and after the field season is over. Seeing a project from start to finish, working with data that I helped collect is truly a wonderful experience and made me feel like I was contributing to a project larger than myself.”?? -Kathleen Grube, Gustavus Adolphus College Learn more and apply by 10 April here: geosociety.co/RG25 #Geology #Geoscience #EarthScience #GeologyRocks
