The Power of Earth Observations in Water Decision-Making How can satellites help predict floods and droughts? ?? Traditional water monitoring relies on ground stations, but many regions lack sufficient coverage. GEOGLOWS integrates Earth Observations with hydrological models to provide reliable streamflow forecasts, even in areas with limited data. This global approach ensures that more countries have the tools they need to anticipate water-related risks and plan for variability. ?? Enhancing Energy and Water Security in Central America through GEOGLOWS A productive week of knowledge sharing and collaboration among GEOGLOWS members, national hydropower organizations, and hydrometeorological services from Central America has led to significant insights into the region's water and energy security challenges. This effort culminated in a comprehensive assessment of the technical capabilities and challenges each nation faces regarding water and energy security. Notably, "@El Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad" (ICE) from Costa Rica and the state-owned electrical power company of Honduras (ENEE) shared insights on how, with support from GEOGLOWS, they effectively managed the "El Cajón" reservoir during the devastating hurricanes Eta and Iota in 2020. These efforts helped reduce economic losses in the area and ensured energy resilience. The event brought together representatives from various countries, including Costa Rica (ICE), Honduras (ENEE), Panama (IMHPA), Nicaragua (INETER), El Salvador (MARN), Guatemala (Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología - INSIVUMEH -), and Belize (@MNR). GEOGLOWS plays a vital role in empowering these organizations by enabling them to produce river forecasts that leverage local knowledge and data, ultimately contributing to the financial stability and governance of their nations. #GEOGLOWS #EnergySecurity #CentralAmerica #WaterSecurity Organización de los Estados Americanos, Andrés Felipe Sánchez Pe?a, Rodney Martinez, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Chris Stoner, Joe Flasher, Group on Earth Observations (GEO), AmeriGEO, AfriGEO, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, Amazon Web Services (AWS), World Meteorological Organization, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Esri, Patricia Cummens, Steve Kopp, The World Bank, Aquaveo, Secretaría General del Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SG-SICA), Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad, Empresa Nacional de Energía Electrica (ENEE), Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales de El Salvador, Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología - INSIVUMEH -

???? Day 2 of Colaboración de GEOGLOWS en Centroamérica Today, we continued our collaboration in San José, Costa Rica, bringing together participants from across the region—both in person and virtually. Presenters from the BYU Hydroinformatics Lab and BYU Civil Engineering capstone team led sessions on flood mapping and groundwater tools, followed by breakout meetings with each hydrological service. These meetings provided hands-on guidance to help participants better understand how their GEOGLOWS portals have been implemented and how they can maximize their use. This collaboration is a big step forward in strengthening data accessibility and decision-making for hydrological services across Central America! ???? #GEOGLOWS #Hydrology #Collaboration #WaterData #CentralAmerica #FloodMapping #Groundwater #WMO #BYU Group on Earth Observations (GEO),? Why Water Information Matters ?? Water is a fundamental resource, and access to reliable water information drives effective management. At GEOGLOWS, we support efforts to provide streamflow forecasts and historical data that help inform decision-making in water management, disaster preparedness, and resilience planning. By leveraging Earth Observations and international collaboration, we contribute to closing information gaps and supporting data-driven decisions. ?? At GEOGLOWS, we believe in the power of early warning systems to protect communities. Hydrology is key to accurate flood forecasting, and together we can ensure that everyone, everywhere gets the life-saving warnings they need. #FloodForecasting #GEOGLOWS #FloodResilience
?? No one should ever be caught off guard by a flood. That’s the vision behind #EarlyWarningsForAll - ensuring life-saving warnings reach everyone, everywhere. ??This month, experts gathered at the World Meteorological Organization HQ for the WMO Hydrological Coordination Panel to check in on the Plan of Action for Hydrology. It’s built on eight big water-related ambitions. The first? No one should be surprised by a flood. ??And yet, floods claim between 5,000 and 10,000 lives every year—that’s about 20 people every single day. As highlighted in the #StateOfClimate report, climate change is fueling more extreme weather, and this number is expected to rise. ??? At the launch of the "Stories on Water" series, Ilias Pechlivanidis emphasized the critical role of hydrology in strengthening flood forecasting and delivering timely warnings. ??
