Our new research exposes the danger of techno-market climate solutions. Start-up companies are claiming to cool the earth by injecting sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. Climate justice collective action is urgently needed to resist the power of private sector actors and unlearn the dominant market ideology that is causing so much suffering, disruption and chaos. Geoengineering technofixes like carbon dioxide removals and carbon markets are risky and speculative false solutions that don't address the root causes of the climate crisis. Instead, they distract us from genuine solutions. Spread the word!
?? #PressReleaseAlert?? Today, as the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC) launches its report on scaling up Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR), civil society organizations and climate justice groups are sounding the alarm. ?? The hard truth? Carbon markets and geoengineering technofixes like Direct Air Capture (DAC), Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS), and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) are not the silver bullet they’re often portrayed to be. Instead, these approaches: ? Distract from real solutions like phasing out fossil fuels and ecosystem restoration ? Facilitate human rights abuses, land grabs, and harm Indigenous communities ? Give polluters a free pass to continue business as usual ?? These technologies are risky and unproven. We can’t let speculative and dangerous technofixes hijack the climate agenda. Real solutions lie in: ?? Ecosystem restoration ?? Rights-based, community-led climate actions ?? Phasing out fossil fuels The fight for climate justice demands systemic change, not dangerous distractions and false solutions. ?? #PressReleaseAlert ?? Victory Against Geoengineering! ?? Indigenous Peoples, climate justice advocates, and civil society networks are celebrating the shutdown of the Arctic Ice Project — a controversial geoengineering experiment that planned to spread synthetic silica-based microspheres on Arctic sea ice to slow melting. ??? After years of criticism, the Arctic Ice Project has officially ceased operations, citing ecological concerns. This is a major win for community-led resistance to risky technofixes that endanger ecosystems and communities, and distract from real climate solutions. ?? Geoengineering is not a solution to the climate crisis—it’s a dangerous distraction that treats symptoms while allowing polluters to continue business as usual. Just a few months ago UN Biodiversity reinforced the precautionary approach to geoengineering, reaffirming the global moratorium. The failure of Arctic Ice Project follows a growing pattern: ? Harvard-backed SCoPEx stratospheric experiment—shut down ? Alameda marine cloud brightening project—shut down ? Carbon removal startup Running Tide—shut down This is a powerful message that communities will resist reckless experiments that put peoples, climate and biodiversity at risk. The fight continues for real #climatejustice solutions—rooted in emissions cuts, Indigenous knowledge, and systemic change. ?? In GeoMon's latest guest article, Fern's Forest & Climate Campaigner Martin Pigeon scrutinises Stockholm Exergi’s Bioenergy with CCS (#BECCS) project, which recently became the subject of the world's largest future Carbon Dioxide Removal (#CDR) carbon credit sale agreement, signed with Microsoft. The article is based on Fern's new briefing on the project, and argues that rather than being a climate solution, it will be a costly gamble that detracts from real solutions. #PressReleaseAlert ?? As #COP29 kicks off, the UN climate talks have already set a troubling tone with countries ?rushing ahead to greenlight international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement paving way for risky geoengineering technofixes. ?? The Article 6.4 Supervisory Body, responsible for setting the rules for the Paris Agreement carbon market, quietly met last month and rebranded their recommendations as "internal standards"—putting them into effect immediately.?The decision on the first day of COP29 to take note to this without negotiation, debate or discussion sets a dangerous precedent. ?? ?? EU flagship #BECCS project will burn forests and public funds but is unlikely to help the climate! ? Our latest report investigates the largest Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (#BECCS) project in Europe, developed by the Swedish company Stockholm Exergi. ? The analysis shows that, despite already receiving €180 million in EU funding and being promised much more from the Swedish government, Stockholm Exergi has not yet found suitable underground storage for the carbon it wants to capture. ? The company’s final investment decision is expected before the end of 2024, and will depend on how much government support it can collect. ? ?? The report also found that cutting Sweden’s annual wood harvest by just 0.8% would capture as much CO2 as Stockholm Exergi's costly BECCS project! ? While BECCS burns biomass and buries CO2 to claim "negative emissions," it actually removes carbon from #forests, not the atmosphere, while healthy forests actually remove carbon from the air! ? On the opening day of #COP29, the COP presidency gavelled through the controversial carbon market provisions under #Article6 without any further discussion. Both procedurally and substantially, this is hugely problematic: Negotiations on Article 6 had reached an impasse at the two previous COPs because governments could not agree on controversial issues. Pretty much the same?documents, without improvement and further discussion, have now been greenlighted on the first day of COP. Governments at COP29 should clearly have rejected this bad process to avoid setting a dangerous precedent of evading COP governance and oversight. It seems not only the COP Presidency was interested in an “early win” and did not want COP29 to look like a failure. However, failure is bound to happen with weak rules and dangerous distractions in carbon markets. Parties will be able to develop further guidance on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and it will be important to follow this closely. But fundamental problems will remain. ? Particularly concerning: the inclusion of “carbon removals” in global carbon markets. The definition of “carbon removals” currently is very vague - but it is likely that it will include both natural approaches to sequester CO2 - think reforestation, restoration of ecosystems, peatlands, mangroves, etc., and large-scale technological approaches to removing CO2 from the atmosphere – known as carbon dioxide removal (CDR) or carbon geoengineering, such as #BECCS, #DACCS and marine geoengineering #mCDR. The latter is a novelty under the UNFCCC and will give these risky and untested technologies a real boost. But: none of these optios should have a place in global carbon markets! ?? Technological Carbon Dioxide Removal: these new technologies that come with major ecological and social risks that could make the climate crisis even worse on balance. Just in October, the UN Biodiversity Convention reaffirmed its moratorium on all climate-related geoengineering approaches a few weeks ago. The UNFCCC COP29 should not undermine the important precautionary work undertaking in other UN Fora and facilitate high-risk tech approaches! For more information on CDR technologies >> https://lnkd.in/eW-pFVYW ?? Ecosystem solutions: these are vital in addressing the twin crises of climate and biodiversity, but they should never be used to offset fossil fuel emissions in carbon markets! Last week the UN's #COP16Colombia biodiversity conference reaffirmed its commitment to a de facto moratorium on #Geoengineering, but next week the UN's #COP29Azerbaijan climate talks could undermine this by including a range of geoengineering schemes in the Paris Agreement's carbon market mechanism. ETC Group's Silvia Ribeiro and Heinrich-B?ll-Stiftung's Linda Schneider explain what's going on in a new guest article: https://lnkd.in/dZemKnxM
