We are thrilled to announce that Geocomp, Inc. and GeoTesting Express, LLC and Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) Rail Line Sinkhole Risk Management Project has been shortlisted for the International Project of the Year Award at the 2025 Ground Engineering Awards! This award recognizes projects that have delivered geotechnical excellence and stand out on the international stage over the last year. Geocomp’s work with SAR addressed a critical sinkhole threat along a 1.5-kilometer freight line near Riyadh, forcing SAR to halt train operations and disrupting freight movement. Investigations revealed that water infiltration from an unlined sewage pond, a leaking sewer line, and stormwater runoff was eroding the subsurface, increasing the risk of collapse. To help SAR restore operations safely, Geocomp implemented a data-driven sinkhole risk management program. By integrating TDR sensors, fiber optic sensing, and InSAR satellite monitoring, SAR gained real-time insight into ground conditions, enabling early detection and proactive risk mitigation. This approach allowed SAR to resume rail service while reducing long-term maintenance costs and disruptions.
