At gentoo.earth, we work with carbon removal companies around the globe, but our roots started in Sydney, Australia. With large-scale, permanent carbon removal set to play a critical role in the journey to net-zero goals, Australia has a unique opportunity to emerge as a carbon removal superpower in the Asia-Pacific region. Our abundant land, solar energy, and sequestration geology, combined with evolving legal and regulatory frameworks, position us favorably for scaling CDR projects and driving meaningful progress in the fight against climate change. Off the back of the 2024 Sector Pathways Review released by the Climate Change Authority, we've put together a comprehensive report exploring the current state of permanent carbon dioxide removal pathways in Australia, including insights from key industry stakeholders and an analysis of the policy & demand landscape. TLDR; while Australia is ripe to be a powerhouse for durable CDR & there are several ambitious companies scaling carbon removal projects down under, corporate activity & policy action is lagging behind our international counterparts. With credit due to some early movers at (e.g. Canva, Atlassian & Macquarie Group) - we need to see more buyers enter the Australian market, otherwise they risk missing out on securing the supply of Australian carbon removals to international buyers. ?? We’re back this week for our Corporate Carbon Removal Activity Review - with a spotlight on Apollo Global Management, Inc. who recently released its 2023 Sustainability report. ??Expanding Carbon Neutral Scope For 2023, Apollo expanded the scope of their carbon neutral operations to include Athene’s facilities & achieved carbon neutral operations for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across their global offices by procuring unbundled RECs & carbon removal offsets. ??Raising the Bar on Carbon Removal Purchasing Criteria In prior years, Apollo has used a two-part criteria to define what they believe to be a “credible carbon dioxide removal project” which requires projects to:?(1) offer at least 100 years of science-based durability and/or (2) additional third party verification or vetting, such as a BeZero Carbon A rating. This year, Apollo published five more factors it considers when selecting CDR projects to invest which are outlined as follows in their latest report: (1) Additional: Does the project provide measurable outcomes that can be verified by an independent third-party? (2) Durable: Has leakage and a carbon credit ‘buffer pool’ been set aside to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances?? (3) Conservative Accounting: Does the project adopt conservative emissions accounting principles that minimize overestimation of credits issuance during the contracted time-period? (4) Science-Based: Is the approach advisable under peer reviewed science-based literature such as published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (“IPCC”)? (5) Regionally Specific: Will the portfolio of CDR solutions generally finance emission removals in the geographies where our emissions are estimated to be released? ??Meaningful CDR Progress In 2023, Apollo procured an undisclosed volume of CDR solutions across nature-based removals, agricultural waste-derived biochar and direct air capture. Examples of providers included in this procurement process are: Charm Industrial (BiCRS) & CarbonCapture Inc. (DAC). In addition, Apollo retired voluntary carbon offsets from Chestnut Carbon (IFM), CarbonCure Technologies (Carbon Injection), Indus Delta Blue Carbon (Afforestation), Novocarbo (Biochar) & an Ocean Biomass startup that has recently shut down its operations (Running Tide). ?? Challenges Ahead While Apollo has made significant progress on addressing their Scope 1 & 2 emissions, there is still a lot of work to be done to address Scope 3 emissions. We commend Apollo Global Management, Inc. & their sustainability team on their efforts to tackle these emissions by providing decarbonisation tools & playbooks to their portfolio companies. ?? We’re kicking off a new series on Corporate Carbon Removal Activity to showcase some of the global companies paving the way forward in developing a carbon removal procurement strategy. This week’s spotlight is on Google who released its 2024 Environmental Report last month. ?? Advancing Carbon Credit Strategy Google aims to neutralize residual emissions with high-quality carbon removal credits by 2030. This marks a move away from maintaining operational carbon neutrality & instead a focus on accelerating a range of carbon solutions & partnerships that contribute towards the company’s goal of net-zero by 2030. ?? Ambitious Targets Google was the first company to pledge to match the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Carbon Removal Purchase program, aiming to contract at least $35M worth of carbon removal credits before March 2025. This commitment builds upon a $200m pledge to Frontier, an advanced market commitment that is accelerating the development of carbon removal technologies by guaranteeing future demand & participation in the First Movers Coalition for carbon removal. ?? Meaningful CDR Progress In 2023, Google completed its first offtake deals through Frontier for approximately 62,500 tCO2e of removal credits with Charm Industrial, CarbonCapture Inc., and Lithos Carbon. The expected delivery timeframes for these credits across these projects ranges from 2024 to 2030. Just the beginning of its rapidly growing carbon removal efforts in the years to come. ?? Challenges Ahead? Google reported that in 2023, total GHG emissions increased 13% year-over-year, representing a 48% increase compared to 2019 “primarily driven by increased data center energy consumption and supply chain emissions.” This is an indicator of the increased pressure companies like Google must face in addressing the environmental impact associated with scaling new technologies like AI.
