Session 7 of Generation West Virginia might have been my favorite... Having never been to Tucker County, I was overwhelmed with just how much intention they put into their tourism opportunities for locals & visitors alike. The towns of Thomas & Davis are small but mighty- thriving art districts, boutique motels, and generational restaurants make the county vibrant & unique. Throughout the weekend, we met with local entrepreneurs who continue to invest their time & resources back into their community. We learned from county government directors about economic drivers, the exploding tourism industry, and the ongoing challenges the local community faces. We participated in workshops on giving & receiving feedback. We even explored the great outdoors of Blackwater Falls & Canaan Valley Resort State Park, which highlighted the importance of the Appalachian ecosystem & how we can continue to steward the land. Time is flying in this fellowship & I am sad to see it coming to an end. However, I see how hard others are working to make this state better & I am continuously inspired to keep going. Only one month left!

Session 7 of Generation West Virginia fellowship and we got Tucker'd! We packed a lot of fun into our time in Tucker County: seeing Black Water Falls, hiking the Lindy Point Trail, visiting the shops in Davis and Thomas. But we did a lot of learning too. Thursday evening in Thomas we took a tour of Invisible Art Studio with Seth Pitt, the owner and artist. He spoke about the revitalization of Thomas and how he and other artisans are investing in the local community. We then journeyed to Timberline for an introduction to Tucker County with Steve Leyh, Executive Director, Tucker County WV Development Authority and Jessica Waldo, Executive Director, Tucker County CVB. They spoke about the economic drivers in Tucker County and the surrounding areas, the exploding tourism industry, and the challenges the local community faces such as broadband access and affordable housing. Friday was spent at Canaan Valley Resort State Park with interactive sessions on giving and receiving feedback with Sarah Koegler from The Ready and the importance of community engagement with David Cooper from Tucker Community Foundation. We ended Friday night with an amazing dinner at White Grass with Chip, the owner, while we learned about the cross country skiing industry. Saturday we wrapped up with learning from The Nature Conservancy about the importance of the Appalachian ecosystem, the work being done to protect and restore our state's forests and rivers, and the nature-based solutions for West Virginia's most pressing economic challenges. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to participate in this fellowship and be surrounded by like-minded West Virginians while learning about the inspiring work being done across the state. Only 2 more sessions to go!

Now (because of the Career Connector) I get to do what I love, which I never thought I would be able to do in West Virginia, for a company that offers a great service to our community!"
