Congrats to Lucy!
Congratulations to Lucy Silverstein, an 11th grader at Providence High School, for being elected as the 2025 Student Advisor to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education! This year’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student voting saw a 50% increase in participation! A huge shoutout to all the amazing candidates—each one brought unique perspectives and strength to the race. The Student Advisor position is one of the few of its kind in the country, ensuring student voices are heard in critical Board decisions. We’re excited to see Lucy bring her leadership to the table!

Elections – even heated ones – provide big civic learning opportunities for K-12 students, and everyone else! The best way for students to learn is through real-life experiences, and what better way to engage in the civic life and election process than by exploring democracy in action? In addition to what kids learn about in social studies at school, you can make elections and voting a family activity! Learn, think, decide, and vote together. Here’s how... #election2024 #civiceducation

Many thanks to Charlotte City Council Mayor Pro Tem Danté Anderson for collaborating and engaging with us! We appreciate your sending Zahara Mushinge Chase Howard Ailen De Bonis Christopher A. Abreu Nitya Garg Katie and Samuel a personal note and an amazing book by Justin Jones-Fosu with important lessons about leadership and how to “bridge the divide”. So important! (We also used concepts from this book to create a civics lesson for HS teachers we work with in Charlotte and across NC). As youth leaders in CMS and city government, these students are already making a big difference - thanks for your support!
