Our team had an incredible day at the #CTEConference in Palm Springs last week. We started off with Darci Kimball and Mary Haus, who shared how they’re making biotechnology accessible for their students and highlighted the importance of work-based learning. Then Howard C. provided valuable insights into the state of the biotech and life science industry, emphasizing its critical role in California's economy and its potential to provide livable wage career opportunities for K-12 students. Lastly, Mikayla Ortega-Donahoo, M.Sc. presented programs and resources that are available for teachers to bring biotech and genomics into their classrooms including our Illumina Genomics Discovery program that is currently available for teachers to use. A huge thank you to our partners including Illumina, Vanessa Light, and all the amazing teachers who make learning about biotechnology possible. If you’re excited about bringing genomics and biotech to your classroom, don’t hesitate to reach out! Let’s make science accessible and exciting for the next generation. #BiotechEducation #Genomics #CTE #STEMEducation #WorkBasedLearning #FutureCareers

What a fantastic day presenting at the #CTEConference for the state of California in Palm Springs! We heard from Darci Kimball and Mary Haus about how they make biotechnology accessible for their students and why work-based learning is so important. We also heard from Howard C. about the state of the Biotech and a Life Sciences industry, why this industry is so important to California residents and why it is an important option for future liveable wage employment for K-12 students. Lastly, I had the honor of sharing about programs and resources we have available NOW for teachers to use and bring into their classrooms! Particularly, I got to share about the Illumina Genomic Discoveries program, a program near and dear to my heart. Thank you to our program partners, especially to Vanessa Light, and to all the teachers that make learning about biotech possible! After years of planning and collaboration with Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) and many community and industry partners, our Life Science Station doors are finally open. We celebrated its temporary location at the Life Science Station Open House last week. District administration, incredible educators, and valued partners from industry, government, and the community came together to mark the launch of this amazing initiative. Each year, the Life Science Station will serve every 4th grade student in CVESD—around 4,000 students annually. This new educational experience will immerse students in the dynamic fields of life sciences and biotechnology through hands-on career exploration activities. Here’s to inspiring the next generation.
