Today, we're particularly proud to announce a new partner: IQT (In-Q-Tel). We have received a strategic investment from IQT, which identifies innovative technologies to support the U.S. national security community and America’s allies. We're excited to partner with IQT, and to welcome managing partner Tom Gillespie as a board observer. This announcement complements several other partnerships and strategic relationships with industry leaders across defense, ag, heavy industry, and geospatial (which you can read more about in the press release, linked in the comments). Raising cash should be easier in 2025 ?? During the opening day of the SmallSat Symposium this week, panelists discussed the need for space startups to raise cash. The topic was a primary focus of a session which looked specifically at the state of the funding market for early round endeavours. Including Lewis Alun Jones, Investment VP at Generation Space and Seraphim Space, who explained that "A year ago, all was doom and gloom, but the market recovered pretty well with many new businesses being founded. We saw early stage (funding) becoming pretty resilient although growth stage was fairly stagnant. We see 2025 as giving us a lot of hope with potential IPO markets returning. ?? Index Highlights: Deals and Investment by Region ?? In 2024, North America solidified its lead with an impressive 228 deals. Meanwhile, Asia is catching up fast, surpassing Europe for the second year running with 178 deals, compared to Europe's 172 deals in 2024—China alone driving a remarkable 83 of those! ?? Investment in the space sector saw significant regional shifts in 2024. North America experienced a 25% decline year-over-year, largely due to the absence of major SpaceX raises (compared to their $750M round in 2023) and fewer large deals (six deals over $100M vs. nine in 2023). Meanwhile, other regions surged ahead: Europe recorded an 85% increase, while Asia soared by 145% YoY. Notably, Asia outpaced North America in the first half of the year before the trend reversed, with North America closing the year slightly ahead at ~$3.4B vs. Asia’s ~$3B. Exciting news! AscendArc Raises $4M for its Small GEO Sats ??? Seraphim Space Ventures II (SSV II) portfolio company AscendArc emerged from stealth this morning with $4M in funding to develop small GEO communication satellites. The company, founded by ex-Starlink engineer Chris McLain, raised $505,000 in a pre-seed round and $3.45M in seed funding. Investors include Seraphim Space, Everywhere Ventures, Portland Seed Fund, Thermo, and Hunter Communications. “Their innovative approach holds the potential not only to revolutionise commercial satellite communications—providing even lower cost satellites for the commercial market—but also to provide crucial solutions for countries’ national security,” said Generation Space Investment VP Lewis Alun Jones.
