Big news for student parents in Maryland! Across the U.S., 1 in 5 college students is a parent, yet only five states collect data on their experiences. That’s why Maryland’s latest step toward tracking parental status in higher education is so important. Sponsored by Delegate Kerr, this bill would ensure student parents in Maryland are seen in the data — a key move toward stronger policies and better support. With a Senate hearing set for April 2 at 1:00 PM, this is a major moment for student parents. Let’s push for a future where their realities are counted and considered.

  • Not long ago, student mothers were denied financial aid and discouraged from pursuing their dreams. Today however, thanks to decades of advocacy, policy changes and the determination of mothers in college, more parenting students are stepping into lecture halls, leading campus movements and shaping the future for themselves and their families. This progress didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of years of relentless efforts to break down barriers. Let’s take a look at how far we’ve come: Then vs. Now - Access to Higher Education Then: Women, especially mothers, were often discouraged from pursuing higher education. Some colleges had quotas limiting female enrollment. Now: Women now make up the majority of college students and though challenges remain, more student parents are enrolling in higher education. - Pregnancy & Enrollment Then: Pregnant students were often forced to drop out or expelled from school due to stigma and institutional policies. Now: Title IX protects pregnant and parenting students from discrimination, ensuring they can stay in school. - On-Campus Childcare Then: This was virtually nonexistent. Student parents had to rely on family or completely drop out. Now: Some colleges now offer on-campus childcare. Federal grants like CCAMPIS, provide campus-based child care services to help parents focus on their education. - Advocacy & Policy Change Then: Few organizations existed to support and encourage student parents to pursue their degrees. Now: Programs like Generation Hope’s FamilyU Cohort and the Policy, Advocacy and Research team, continuously push for systemic change to support student parents. While Title IX protects pregnant students and more universities offer childcare and flexible schedules, systemic barriers and challenges persist. This Women’s History Month, we are recognizing the past, celebrating the progress we have made so far and pushing for a future where NO student parent has to choose between education and their family. ??
