The Consortium will be welcoming Dr. Patrick Clarkin as the second speaker in our Spring 2025 Speaker Series! Dr. Clarkin is the Chair of the Anthropology Department at UMass Boston and has spent over two decades researching the impact of war on human health and development, particularly among Southeast Asian refugee populations.? In his upcoming talk, “Coming of Age in War: Puberty in Girls During Conflict,” Dr. Clarkin will explore how war-related stressors shape biological development, with a focus on their effects on puberty and menarche in girls. Drawing on historical and contemporary cases, he will discuss patterns of disrupted development, possible biological mechanisms, and the broader implications for human health. This talk is based on his collaborative research with Dr. Meredith Reiches, a biological anthropologist and founding member of Harvard University’s GenderSci Lab.? This event will be in person only.
